Subject: Heads on the 3.9 problems?
IP: Logged

Message:
I dropped a valve a few months back on my 2002 3.9 quad so i pulled both heads to do a port job.

To my horror 5 exhaust valves and 2 intake valves were horrably miss ground. This may explain the miss fire ive had since day one.
I took them in to get them checked and reground and they find one head is cracked the other is also a paper weight from the wear of the miss ground seats.

Are these heads plagued with problems?
I was planning on getting modified heads but if these heads are known to be problimatic then ill just cheap out.

To my knowledge these are pretty good engines, as a matter of fact i've never heard anyone complain about the heads(other than the flow numbers up top). You might ask larry and see what he thinks..by the way who is going to do your port work?

Sam at socaldakota sells a set of ported heads for the 3.9. I thought hughesengines used to sell them as well but i dont see them listed on there site.

88 3.9 5 speed 4X4 reman engine with about 16,000 miles.
I think the lesson to be learned here is that not all machine shops do good work. I had to have a couple of new valve seats installed on mine when I had the heads rebuilt. Other than that I haven't had any problems (as far as the machine work goes) My engine had 172000 when I tore it apart for the rebuild. I did the tear down and reassembly, the machine shop did the rest. I did replace the cam with a stock cam, all the valves and springs, and locks.
Good luck,

I havent heard any negative feed back and thats a relief. Im thinking its safe to assume that i just had a faulty pair of heads from factory.
Ill take the plunge and get a new pair of heads and hope there wont be a next time.
