I have a 1997 with a V6. The timing chain is rattling against the cover. Is there a chain tensioner in there? The book doesn't mention it.

There's a chain guide, and it wears badly. The dealer will have an updated timing chain design for replacement.

Its sounds like it coming from the valve cover. I pulled the cover and everything looks ok.

Bob, Does this mean the guide is not used any longer? The guide was pretty much gone.

I have a 1997 v6 and i did the timing chain right after i bought it. Got the truck cheap cause the guy thought it was a main bearing going haha sucker. Anyway theres no tensioner in there just the guide. When i did mine it was hitting the guide and the caseing. Easy enough job took about 8 hours and replaced my front main seal well i was in there(7 bucks why not) They didnt install timing chain tensioners stock till 1999 i believe. I didnt even go buy one i just went and got a heavy duty preformance double roller chain cost about $100 with cam and crank sprokets

It's a redesigned guide that doesn't wear as much. But you can go double-roller as stated, also.

Thanks Bob. I ordered a Timing Package from Dodge and the idiot at the parts counter swore up and down that the guide came with the pacakge. Of course it didn't. I called back and spoke to a more intelligent person who ordered the guide seperately. Needless to say, without the guide, I'm stuck waiting. Thanks again.
