 Subject: loud noise

97 3.9 This morning I heard the awful sound. I popped the hood and it sounded like it was coming from the driver side valves cover. i pulled the cover and found nothing unusual except a lot of crud. I remember reading a thread a long time ago about someone having a problem that sounded like rocker arms and it turned out to be the timing chain. when i press the gas and let it off it thats when the sound occurs. does this sound right?
