I have a 1994 Dodge Dakota 4WD. Just today the fuel pump went out. Had AAA tow to a garage. The price of the pump was $286.00 and $164.00 Labor. Total bill is $440.00.

Is this a good price?

price of the pump looks good. 2.5hrs @ 65.00 looks ok too. but ouch!. haven't had to change mine yet but i'd save the $164.00 and spend an afternoon bonding with my truck.

maybe i'm crazy like that.

you didn't get taken. looks fair to me.

Thanks for your reply. I didnt trust myself to do this job. I hear it can be dangerous. It sounds like alot of people take the bed off to replace the pump. Had this been on an older truck when they were mounted on the outside of the engine.....I would have quickly replaced it.

I forgot to say, this is a V6 3.9 engine. Truck has been very reliable. It has over 153,000 on it and runs great. Should I tell the garage to replace the filter too or is this part of the deal when they replace the pump?

Is it common for the pump to go out without any warning? All I did was park it and went to start....and boom, no start! It was running great until then.

Thanks again for your reply!

i've seen them go without warning. i forget what years but i think up to '95 they had an external fuel filter under the cab inside the drivers framerail.

Thanks!

Yes, I think too the fuel filter is under the driver side cab. Should i replace this as well?

Is there any other nickle and dime part (s) that could or should need replaced while performing this job? I hate to go pick my truck up and find a higher bill or worse get it back to find out something wasn't replaced that should have been replaced.

I never realized fuel pumps cost this much. I know he went to a dealer to get the part. Could this be why it's so high?

If it's external on your truck, it's on the inside of the left frame rail, half way back. A silver canister about 3 inches long.

If you cannot find it along the frame rail then it is all one piece in the tank.

I don't know about a 94, but I do think some where along the line they did put the filter in the fuel tank, so when the pump was changed the filter was changed also. The hardest thing on the pump is letting it run out of fuel. I did that once and it ruined the pump on a Dodge Omni.
88 3.9 5 speed 4X4
good luck

It is in the tank. I just called the mechanic and he said it was part of the fuel pump replacement.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
