Hi guys! My '96 Sport Longbed with a 3.9 me stumped. It often loses power, stalls and is then hard to restart. It occurs at all speeds without warning and then, once it's happened, will run well for a bit. It generally happens several times within a trip. At one time, the check engine light came on and a tech told me it was a low voltage error message. He reset the computer and the truck ran good for a day or two. After that, it went back to its old trick. I'd appreciate any help, as the tech says his diagnostic computer says all the sensors readings are OK.
P.S. - The check engine light has come on again, but the tech can't check it due to work load.

Check that 'notorious ' splice of 3 or 4 wires
in the harness about 8 inches down from the
underhood fuse/relay box .
Drivers side fenderwall.

I appreciate the help and other responses to my question. After changing the pick-up (in the distributor) & the MAP sensor, as well as checking the TPS (throttle position sensor) & distributor cap, it turns out that the problem was the computer. I bought one for $100 from my local boneyard (junkyard) and it's running well. I hope this helps others.

dddddd, it sounds to me like you may have a serious vacuum leak. If you have a vacuum gauge chek the vac. when cold and when it gets warmed up. even cold it should have at least 15-17 inches of vac, generally more the better, if below 15 I would try to find a vac. leak checking the vacuum lines, and power brake booster. Sorry but thats about all I can think of for now, wish I could see what the problem acts like maybe I could be of more help that way.
Oh yeah, if it has 20 inches of vacuum, or more then you are probably ok as far as vac. leaks go. Mine runs 20 inches at normal op temp.
Good Luck

i had a problem with my 89 dakota, lack of power, fuel milage was ok but not great. finally found the problem, the vacuum line going to the diverter valve on the smog pump was defective where it was attached. had to replace part of the line after a fan belt broke and took it out. once it was replaced the truck runs sronger and my fuel milage jumped up and my a/c system works better.
