Subject: 96 fuel guage

Message:
The 96 dokata I just bought, came with the optional 22 gallon fuel tank. The person I bought it from says, I have roughly 6 to 8 gallons left when I get to E on the guage. Is this true, and is there any way to correct this so the guage will read correctly?

that doesn't sound right. On my old 95, when the low fuel light came on it meant 1/8 tank left.

The fuel level is controlled by the fuel sending unit which is attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. The sender is a replacable item. I had to order one for my 95 and it was $50. New Fuel pump was around $170 and came with new sender. Being a 96 it may be worth the extra cash to replace the whole unit. the filter is attached to the pump and not replacable.

should be 2.75 gallons with an 1/8th of a tank left on a 22 gallon container. Best thing to do is do what you can to drive that thing down to the fuel light coming on and then filling it up. Whatever the math works out to subtracting what you filled up from 22 gallons is going to be the reserve amount you have when the light comes on. Then you can figure out how many miles you'll get out of it by multiplying that number against your MPG. I'm good for roughly 50 miles when my light comes on ( 18 gallon tank )..1997 dakota extended cab 2wd.

They say enough for 50 miles when light comes on

on my 95 4x4 when it comes on I have 3 gals left
I only tried that once I don't like to run under
1/4 hard on the pumps running them to empty the
gas in the tank keeps the pump cool

run it to 1/4 or e than fill and see how much it
takes

On my 88 ram 3/4 ton it got so bad at 3/4 it was
empty full it was full

I replaced the pump and sender now its right on
they do go bad

My sending unit is toast. Under a half tank it either shoots to empty and hits the warning chime or it sits at half a tank. Above half a tank, it shows the proper level. At 165k on the truck, I think I'm just going to replace the fuel pump assembly and avoid a dead fuel pump down the road. I should probably do the wifes grand am while I'm at it as it's at about the same mileage and she likes to keep that damn fuel tank near an 8th on me...

I have never had the light come on, the needle just reads empty, and i have roughly 8 gallons left according to my calculations. I was wondering if there was some way to correct that reading not the lite
