for almost a week now my truck has been running like something is holding it back. It's had full tune up and runs great and i've got power. some where saying they thought it might be the cat converter but like i said i have power but it just feels like i've got a load in my bed or like i'm pulling a trailer or something! I let off the gas and it wants to start coming to a stop. i feel like i've got to ride the clutch forever till it gets going. engine wise, is there anything that would give this sensation? the front end has been really weird here lately. been very swervy and pulling hard to the right and seems like sometimes it wants to dart either left or right. i'm hoping it's all just the alignment but can't help but wonder if it's anything to do with the rear end. I changed the diff. oil about 1 year ago and everything looked good back there. also, i have new calipers and rotors on the front. they are not hanging up, all wheels spin freely including the back. the truck even seems like something is holding it back when i'm coasting downhill with the clutch in. Please please please, i hope this is the front alignment. have not noticed any unusual sounds or noises from rear end or any clunking. one thing i did notice when i was checking the rear wheels for free spin was that the wheels had some play in them when you pushed in away from you and pulled out towards you, like when you go to take the tire off and put it back on. the play was very little and i couldn't even see the travel with my eye but i felt it. i would have to somehow measure it to get an exact amount of play. what's the chances of problems in my rear end? it's got me worried. i've dumped about $500 into this truck so far in the last month. i have 73,000 mile on it and it's coming to that mileage now where things start to need replacing.

i'm not sure about the starter. how would i find this out? wouldn't it be making strange noises and grinding? it's starts fine with no strange sounds at the starter. it is definately something holding me up. i noticed again today when trying to pull out it's like it's so much work and then once it's going it's not so much work! it feels like something holding and then lets loose or gets easier but it's doing this without making any kind of clunks or noises or popping. it's killing my MPG too! is there a way i could know for sure if it's the starter without just assuming and replacing it, credit card is getting up there with fixing stuff on this truck! guess i could tap on it with a hammer or something and see if the truck runs any better without holding back. for the record if anyone else wants to take a stab at this i've got no codes and all sensors seem to be operating normally. Nice color on plugs, o2's probly ok. Just cleaned the throttle body and IAC opening and plunger tip and put new throttle body gasket on,

K&N filter, brass cap and rotor, TPS mod @.72v, crank sensor mod, NGK fr5's @.040, stant thermo, JBA wires,

the truck couldn't run any better other than whatever the hell is holding it back! i've questioned my rear wheel cylinders sticking since the front factory calipers already took a crap. but i can always coast the truck in neutral with truck off so i don't think the rear brakes would be sticking when the truck run either! I'm at wits end here!! this is going to sound really stupid but it all seems like this started when i put my new serpentine belt on. the belt fits fine and has same grooves as old one. like i said that's probly stupid but it's the last most recent thing i've put on so maybe that's why it sticks out to me.

Have you checked the front brakes, the brakes aren't the best on these trucks. Kinda sounds like the calipers sticking.

I wonder if the emergency brake could be hanging up just a little bit.

'97 RC V6, 5spd, soon to be V8, 5spd!
Maybe not a 5-speed, but an automatic will work.

Plugged cat would not make the truck feel like it was being dragged down on compression. Nor the cat. Starter would be making one hell off a gear meshing noise that would scare you to death even at idle speed. That pretty well leaves brakes. After a good run feel all the wheel centers. That should tell the story. One brake possibility not mentioned yet is the self adjusters on rear wheels. Might be there binding up and over tightening the rear brakes.

i thought the same thing about the rear brakes! the front calipers are new, had to replace them cause both the factory ones froze up and fried my brakes and rotors. So the rotors, brakes and both calipers are new and working fine. that is why i wondered if i should replace the rear wheel cylinders, maybe they are freezing up too. I did notice too this past weekend when i took my back wheels off that when i tried to pull the drums off they were tight as hell. I know i didn't put them on that tight! so i loosened the adjusters a little bit just enough to give some drag on the drum. Question is though, if the back brakes were holding up enough to create a noticeable drag on the truck then i would think the truck wouldn't coast in neutral like on an incline not running. but it does coast like backwards when i go to pull out before the clutch engages. well, i'm getting an alignment this weekend and hope like hell that's what it is. i'm fighting lately to keep the truck from darting left or right on the highway so that could be where my drag is coming from. if the alignment doesn't fix it then i'll move to the rear brakes. I'll start with wheel cylinders then after that i'll check into one of those hardware kits for rear brakes. anyone ever get them? i would think you can get a kit rather than buying each individual part back there. just putting an adjuster on i wouldn't think would solve the problem. i appreciate everyone's advice so far. I also thought if it was starter it would make a hell of a racket!! any links to lubing the e-cable would be great, it's worth a shot! oh, i've been checking the wheel centers. front's are hardly even warm. haven't even thought to check the rears. will do that tomorrow when i get to work.
