Subject: where can I find the info on...

... the CPS mod? I have done a couple searches but came up empty handed. Any ideas? This will not hurt the truck during towing right? I don't think it will but just making sure. thanks in advance

Here's a write-up I did a while back...

http://www.blackshireserver.net/OhioDakotas/docs/Crankshaft%20Position%20Sensor.doc

Won't hurt towing...HOWEVER...some people have noticed their truck pings when they are still using the stock range plugs and thermostat. So if it does, might wanna switch a heat range cooler plug...or if you wanna risk losing a lil gas mileage, a cooler thermostat.

Thanks a lot for the info! Now about that thermo... I have the 180 thermo installed on my truck and could it be one of the causes for my poor gas mileage? 14mpg

I average 16-18 in town with my 180 thermo driving somewhat reasonably...averaged 21 highway on my last big trip.

I guess it must be my off-road lights, my huge hood scoop, and the extra weight from the QC. I am at 85,000 miles so I am thinking of replacing my O2 sensors and my cat. I used to get 16 a long time ago. lol.

as larry of JJ auto said awhile back
not all mods work the same on all trucks
i put a 180 in last year my truck became a total gas pig and i noticed no performance gains

i picked up a 195 at napa and went to 1 range colder plugs pinging is gone and with this i did see a bit of a gain in performance and my mpgs are back

Yeah, that's true...my 16 was after a mpg drop by adding the 180 thermo. I just received my new 195 thermo today and when I get the rest of the parts I ordered, I'll be putting it in along with some Autolite 3923's.

I guess I will be putting in a new 195 thermo. I have the clutch fan off but have the stock electric fan. Do you think I will have to install the clutch fan now that I have a hotter thermo? Thanks for all your help!

Not sure...I don't THINK so...but just keep an eye on it. Especially with the a/c running in stop and go traffic.

I went back to a 195 thermostat also after trying a 180. I also found the IAT relocation decreased my gas mpg, so I put that back to stock too. What does the CPS mod do other than better throttle response? Any affect on gas mpg?

the CPS mod advances the timing a little. a little more power/mileage. i wouldn't do it if your running the Superchips. that programming advances timing also and the combo will most likely ping like hell unless you run 93 octane.

I think if you set things up just right you can avoid pinging (cooler plugs, cooler thermo, and higher octane fuel). If you're gonna run the Superchips and ONLY cooler plugs with the CPS mod...then you'll prolly have pinging issues. Not positive though...haven't had the money to invest in a Superchips tuner.

Is it worth the trouble doing the CPS mod for the power and mileage gain?

I personally didn't notice a huge difference...but some people notice some big differences with the "butt dyno." Like curly mentioned above...and like many others have mentioned...not all mods work the same for everyone. Some people notice huge gains, some people don't notice anything. Is it worth trying? Definitely. You may like it. And if you don't, you can always switch it back (the second time is always easier than the first).

i think it depends if your truck is an auto or manual trans truck. i think the pcm's in the manual truck run a little more timing than the autos.

so, it would affect the auto trans truck more.

I have a 2002 5 Speed with superchips running with the CPS mod. Granted I only run 93 octane and running Halo's. I have never had any ping.
I wish I could give you some MPG numbers but I removed my offroad lights and working on first tank without them. Those lights where killing my MPG. But the power is nice
