Subject: 17 year old need more mpg
IP: Logged

Message:
i am 17 years old I recently bought an 02 dakota cc 3.9. I know about all the mods like 1.7, tb, intake, exhaust, msd ignition and the rest. which of these would show the most improvement. most importantly which ones would be the easiest for me to do with my lack of knowledge?

If you are complaining about gas mileage, then why the hell did you get a truck? Especially a Club-cab? If you want gas mileage then get a car. If you want power stay with the truck.

Maybe not a 5-speed, but an automatic will work.

I could care less. I drove a '93 Chevrolet K3500 with a 454. I got about 10mpg. I drove that thing for about a year. I am sure that you truck averages at least 18-20mpg. I can get about 21-23 out of mine and I drive that b!t(h hard.

WHAT?????? 15-16???? Stay off the damn thing then. Also, if it hauled ass then it was probably the 454SS. Which is totally different. That is just another half-ton truck.

So this is turning into a debate instead of helping the kid...nice.

Modding anything from stock is usually going to increase power and promote better mileage. Port and polish the heads and tell me the engine doesn't run more EFFICIENTLY. The factory isn't going to make sure their castings are perfect, not gasket match the heads to the intake, they also build to the lowest common denominator. Anyone that actually cares about the maintenance of their truck can push the engineering boundaries more. The factory builds to avoid failure as much as possible to avoid warranty work from people who run 25,000 miles between oil changes.

if you're after mileage,
1)Don't spend 200 bucks on a CAI,(use that 200 for a tune up with good parts) buy a 10" chrome air cleaner instead.
2) use all syn fluids, engine, tranny , rear diff
3) proper tire alignemnt & pressure
4) make sure your truck is in good tune and all sensors working properly
5) V8 TB
6) Dynomax 17748 muffler
7) i've read here that some have seen a mpg increase with the Superchips. That is if you keep your foot out of it.
8)Slow Down.

these, IMO, are the easiest ways to see a limiited performance increase with increased mileage.

otherwise, if you can do it, porting the intake & heads, 1.7rr's would also increase effiency and power. but you said you had limited knowledge so.

NOWAY AND DADDIO are throwing you good advice. I'd like to add a bit. Making sure ALL sensors are with-in specification well require a volt meter to get those readings. It needs to be a digital one. Your going to need a book for the required information. Factory manual is by far the best especially for someone NOT mechanically adept. MSD does nothing to the stock engine . Might help the idle be somewhat smother and better response MAYBE.For sure MSD will cause your ignition parts to wear faster. The good tune-up with quality brass contacts and 8mm or 8.5mm wires. There both good. None of this will gain much MPG unless your system is in poor repair. cleaning up your exhaust ports and intake ports and throttle bore WILL give you some seat of the pants boost. Use the performance to go fasrer and millage will suffer. Use i gently and you'll gain a couple miles per gal. I'd be surprised if you was willing to go through all this. You need to be addicted to this sort of thing. But here it is anyway and good luck. Oh . Changing the exhaust will only help a couple HP provided you increase intake capabilities. DO NOT go with bigger exhaust pipe. headers are good PROVIDED you spend the bucks for a really good proven set. PRICY.

yes, do all of those you mentioned. i'd go with the superchips tuner instead of the MSD. IMHO, you'll benefit more from the SC than the MSD.
the msd will eat rotors and cap in about half the usual time. like 10k instead of 30k.

well I got the 10 inch element yesterday, orderd the fastman and put on the dynomax myself yesterday and i have 400 dollars left to spend. so yall r sayin that should go towards either headers or a superchip?

I have had a tune up already and checked all sensors.

again, this is only my opinion. you'll get more from the Superchips than the headers. my reasoning is that the Superchips is a little cheaper than the headers and it is way more useful than the headers. i'm sure some may disagree with me but they are entitled to their opinions also.

you can always save again and buy the headers at a later date.
