4 months ago replaced the fuel pump in my 94 V6 Dakota.Several times recently it hasn't restarted for me. When it does this there's no preasure at the fuel rail. I've changed relay's for the fuel pump and the auto shut off. Banging on the pump seems to help but not always. After a while it starts and run fine. It did die on me while driving up a mountain the other day, this is the only time it has died while running.

Have you checked the splice, i think it's 115. It's about 6-8" down from the PDC. You'll have to unwrap the covering from the bundle of wires leading down from the PDC toward the firewall.

It's a 4-way splice. 3 wires crimped/spliced to one. It does control the ASD relay and fuel pump.

it's a well known issue. Just cut the block out, resplice it with good solder and retape it all back up.

Does that splice have any control over the fuel gage too? I'm curious because I get an intermittent problem with the gas gauge flipping to empty and triggering the low fuel chime. Truck doesn't run any different, but the gauge started acting up a couple of weeks ago.

Sorta.

The fuel sending unit is a bolt on part of the pump assembly in the tank. If you have no power/ intermittent power to the fuel pump then you also have no/intermittent power to the sending unit on the pump as well. As a result, your fuel level may not show up as being accurately on the gauge in cab.

Check the splice first, you may be wasting time trying to track down a non existent problem.

the sending unit's also go bad. Last i checked, the sending unit was a dealer only part. But, you may want to just opt on spending the extra cash on a new pump which will come with a new sending unit.

If your pump is old, this may be a better option. You have to pull the pump to replace the sending unit anyway. It's just as easy to replace the whole pump assembly. Keep in mind on some models the filter is part of the pump assembly and not replaceable. So there's another advantage of spending the extra cash to replace the pump.

That was kinda the train of thought since I've got over 160k on the truck and I've had bad luck with domestic fuel pumps reaching the 170-180k mark, so replacing it seems like the best idea anyway. I've done a few of them on other vehicles anyway, so it's not an issue of not being able to do it, just haveta save up for that spendy thing.

Many here, myself included, have found it easier to remove the bed than drop the fuel tank.

Yep, I watched the dealer in Grayson, KY replace my pump while on a trip, and that's how they did it. Two guys lifted one side of the bed while another r&r the pump.

I had a similar problem with a Dodge Caravan. It turned out that it was the connection at the pump that was bad. Pounding on the tank jarred the connection enough that the pump started working again.

what youve got is a dead contact bar on your pump motor, and when it lands on it it wont spin but banging on it moves it to the next bar so it works

my dakota had the same problam and it turned out that the pump was bad, so i replaced it with an identical one from my buddy that had about the same miles, and im wondering, when that one quits can i just run a seperate external pump and regulater, the one ive got is internal, and ex are cheaper

dropped the tank this weekendand checked conections ect.. of course every thing was working fine then. Next morning fired and died. A few bangs and fires up. Hasn't been doing itr as much, sounds like a dead contact bar is what I got. Now I'll have to battle it out with NAPA auto parts over getting a new one since this one is only four months old.
