Subject: Contradicting stories?
IP: Logged

Message:
What's the deal? I have 180 degree t-stat in my truck and whenever I tell someone, they're like, "Dude, you're going to sludge up your engine." On the other hand, there are others that don't think that at all. Can someone clear this up once and for all? Is this something that might be more common in a V6 than a V8?

'Sludge Up your engine'?

Only thing I can think of is that they may be thinking it's a -hotter- T-stat than stock. Don't know why... because if oil gets too hot it tends to 'sludge up'

Otherwise, I know if you go to low you end up with it taking forever to warm up to operating temp. But a 180 isn't -too- low. Heck, I ran a 180 on my old 1980 Chevrolet 305 after I rebuilt it, never a problem. Didn't 'sludge up'. And all the 'experts' told me that the engine would -never- run right the way I built it.

Guess what? It ran great :0) Just goes to show that 'experts' aren't always right.

Running a 180 degree thermostat is o.k. and will not harm your engine. I've got one in my truck!

That person apparently doesn't know much about magnum engines, and what can be done with them.

Next time someone says something about you running a 180 degree T-stat, tell them that 195 is stock, 160 will throw a mil code(too cold), and that the 180 works well with these engines.

Later!

Thanks. I'm relatively knew to working on engines, so it's always nice to get it straight from people who know their stuff. Thanks again!

It depends on your climate and your driving patterns. The engine has to get hot enough to evaporate the condensation that forms in the crankcase. If the condensation doesn’t evaporate over time sludge will form. A lower thermostat will cause the engine to run cooler and you will need to drive it a longer distance to evaporate any condensation. This is especially true in the winter. Condensation is generally more prevalent if you drive mostly short trips and in the winter months. A hotter thermostat helps evaporate condensation but using a lower thermostat doesn’t necessarily mean you will have sludge problems.

MikeW, or anyone else who may know. You say that it depends on the "climate". What exactly does this mean? I live in eastern Canada, where it gets fairly cold in the winter, it can go to just below 0 farenhuit some nights. In the summer it can get up to 85-90 farenhuit. In the winter I don't do alot of long distance driving, but in the summer I do.

So is this one of those cases where I should not get the 180 thermostat?

How does one tell if they should or shouldn't I guess is what I am asking?

Thanks in advance.

BLeagues, I guess I would ask why you need a 180 thermostat. IMO, unless you have serious mods, or are trying to solve a pinging or overheating problem, I doubt that there is any advantage to a 180 thermostat. There is no right or wrong answer as to if you should or shouldn’t get a 180 thermostat. If a 180 thermostat was right for everyone then it would have been a factory standard.

180 T-Stat doesn't 'tell' the computer anything. :0)

My take was that it just lowers engine temp slightly, resulting in less detonation and a more controlled burn because of it. Is my understanding wrong?

The 180 T'Stat wasn't a factory option because the factory needs to be more concerned with emissions rather than power. A 180 degree t'stat will NOT sludge up an engine...Mopar has run many tests (as well as other 3rd parties) and found that the 180 makes the best power in the Magnum engines. (Notice the term "power"...not emissions.)

I'm young and ignorant but I thought that a T-stat was just a little ring/valve thing that was made to "open" at it's designated temp allowing more coolant to flow. this may be way off but that's all it looks like to me.

Thats pretty much all it is, yeah. :0)

By lowering the engine temps, using a lower-rated T-stat, you automatically reduce the temps in the combustion chamber. This means less chance for premature (no spark needed) detonation of the air/fuel mixture. It also means that the incoming air/fuel mix is a -wee- bit cooler, and cooler mixtures expand more rapidly when heated by the ignition of the fuel, producing a bit more push on the piston, and a little more power.

Not a lot, but the detonation reduction is probally the most compelling reason to get one.

I swear my 99 3.9 runs better with the standard temp thermostat......when i ran a 180 stat, it idled funny and just didn't seem as smooth to me...i've always had idle problems with this thing but the 180 made it worse......
