Subject: Intrepid Cooling Fans

I just wanted to let you all in on what I tried on my 93. I did
some measuring and found that cooling fans off of an Intrepid
would fit perfectly. So, I bought a set from a salvage for like
$30.

They are the perfect width. Height wise, there is a couple inches
of radiator showing but it's fine. They are 2 speed fans and on
low, they work great if it's below 80° or so outside. Above 80°,
the temp creaps up slowly in stop and go traffic. Not bad
though. I haven't overheated it. On high, they seem to do fine
in whatever temps. I towed the biggest U-Haul trailor available,
loaded full, through Denver traffic in about 102° heat last
summer. On high they kept the engine plenty cool.

I hooked it up through a relay I found in the fog light section at
Advance Auto. The package said 30 amps but the relay itself
says 40a. I carry a spare in case but the one never burned out in
1000 miles of towing that trailor.

One thing I have found though.... I need to rewire the fans using
heavier gage wiring. I noticed that after that trip, the connectors
I used looked a slight bit melted. In the meantime, I just use
them on low and the wires stay cool.

Any thoughts? Comments?

Are you using a fuse on the load side of the relay? If not, your wiring will become your fuse. 8) Nothing should be melting. Determine your power needs and size the fuse and wires accordingly.

do they help your gas mileage, or feel of power?
If you took the engine driven fan off I would think you would gain a little power as well as gas mileage.
Do you turn it on through a switch, or use a temp sensor on the engine?
Sounds like you may be onto something there.
