CCMAN, what year is it? Mine is an 88, 3.9 5 speed 4X4 mine uses 10w30 motor oil, 2 quarts, I use syn. trans oil, I had my trans rebuilt and they recomended that, so that's what I use. I think in 92 Dodge changed transmissions for your sake I hope so, I had to have mine rebuilt 3 times before it was done right. High Gear in Memphis rebuitl it the first 2 times, wrong, then I decided to just go to a junk yard and see if I could get a used one. Well there was a retired transmission guy there and said he knew what they did wrong, a common occurence with the new process/new venture A535 trans. In all it cost me 3thousand dollars to get it fixed correctly. And High Gear refused to stand behind their warranty. Ok I have a chip on my shoulder against Hi Gear.
Just venting.

ok, so 10w90 or 10w30? only 4 quarts for the manual trans?

it's a 2002 3.9 5spd, gears seem a bit sticky after 70,000.

i can call the dealer as well and find out but it's much more convenient to ask you guys!

I have an 03 with a manual trans. I was under the impression that the transmission was a sealed unit and the fluid cannot be changed. Any truth to this?

taken from an '02 FSM:

NV3500 Manual trans- approximate dry fill(to bottom of top fill plug hole) = 4.8 pts. on a 4x2
4.18 on a 4x4.

Now what it says to use.(this is funny)
Mopar Manual Trans lubricant is recommended or equivalent for use in manual transmissions.

Go Figure!!! I've heard both 75w-90 gear lube and 30w motor oil. haven't had to change mine yet. when somone nails DC as to which is right, let me know please.

I have a 2002 5 speed

The manual say's Mopar manual tansmission fluid P/N 4874464. I sorta gave up on this, but I feel I need to change it having 107,000 miles on it. What would be a synthetic equal to this is unknown to me as well Daddio.

ccman, the '02 FSM reads PINTS not quarts. think about it. yeah, the case is pretty big but, it's full of gears, shafts, bearings, etc.. i believe that it is definitely 4.8 pints. and the fill plug is about 1/2 way up on the side of the tranny.

I found this interesting Daddio, I found this on another board somewhere.

Synchromesh transmission fluid is designed for certain manual transaxles and transmission used by General Motors and Chrysler corporations. It provides excellent oxidation stability, low temperature performance, excellent synchronizer performance and superior compatibility with yellow metals such as bronze, brass and copper components found in manual transaxles and transmissions. Synchromesh fluid is specifically formulated for transmissions used by General Motors and may be identified by GM part No. 12345349. This product also replaces GM part No. 12345577 used in Top Load four-speed manual transmission applications. Likewise, for Dodge truck applications, Synchromesh fluid is identified under Chrysler part No. 4874464.

Synchromesh fluid was developed for use in the NV (New Venture) 3500 five-speed manual transmission used by both Chrysler and General Motors. This is the only product recommended for applications using the NV3500 Transmissions after 1991. Between 1988 and 1991 either Synchromesh or 5W-30 engine oil was acceptable in the NV3500.

Message:
Both automakers also use the NV1500 manual transmission, which also requires the Synchromesh fluid. However, the NV1500 transmission requires additional friction modifier to achieve proper performance and protection. General Motors part No.12377916 already has the friction modifier added. On the other hand, Dodge applications using the NV1500 require Chrysler part No.4874464, which does not have the additional friction modifier added. Therefore, an additional 0.2 pint (0.1 liter) of friction modifier must be added to Chrysler part No. 4874464. The friction modifier may be purchased at your local Dodge dealer.
