Subject: V6 ignition timing

Message:
My buddy checked my timing on his OBD2 program on his laptop, and at idle, 780 RPM, the timing was at 17 deg advanced. And as I revved the motor the timing advanced as much as 45 deg!
Is this right?

I set my fuel sync pretty much at ZERO,
and I did the CPS mod about a year ago.
That's about all the advancing I have done to the '98 V6.
I get a pre-ignition type of 'ping' whenever I go up hills.
Haynes doesn't list the proper idle RPMs or the ignition timing.

Can someone let me know the proper specs?
Thanks in advance.

The base timing is set by the crank sensor
10 degrees with the mod it will be 13 to 14

the computer controls it from there and yes at
idle 10 to 15 17 thats normal with a totle of
44 45

when crusing light throttle it will be advanced
30 to 40 degrees as soon as you touch the throttle
it will pull the timing back

Try a set of 1 colder plugs like the NGK FR5 gap
.040

Also a reg stant 195 themo will run around 185 in
these motors the factory 195 is a metered flow
design and will run 195 200

try the next higher grade of gasoline

Doing all of these will eliminate the ping

low fuel pressuer a bad o2 or a vac leak can also
cause ping

your plugs should be a light tan color or your
air/fuel ratio is not right

idle around 700rpm

Thanks Larry. I just reset my CPS back to normal and the truck runs a lot better there. I suspect that my cam key slot may have been cut a few degrees retarded or advanced at the factory because most of the mods here do not work so well with my truck.

Keeping the CPS mod and going up to the next higher grade of gas may more than offset the addition by getting better gas mileage.
