Subject: Cold air or Round hat? Intake
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys,

Just had a question of which intake would be better.
I have a cold air intake with a cone filter right now, and I was wondering how a round Edelbrock filter would compare.
I do have a Cervinis twin air hood.

Would the round filter that sits on the throttle body get more air?

Just a thought, let me know.

Thanks

In my own opinion I would think that the cold-air would be more effecient. You would want to get your air from a colder location. Some people get a functional ram-air or you could make your own. Not too hard. Thanks.

I run a scoop with a K&N 14x3 round with the
K&N exstream top the cold air right from off
the hood blows directly down on top of the
cleaner

In the winter I still use the scoop but use the
reg top or my IAT mounted in the bottom of the
cleaner runs to cold

I can run down to 0 any colder I get the IAT
voltage to high

The cold air setups with a cone if located in a
good spot will flow plenty of cold air

I can notice the diff when I change the top out
for the warmer weather

I never did build a shrould for the system so it
also cools the engine compartment actualy when it
rains and I plug the scoop the motor will run
5 degrees warmer so it makes quit a diferance
blowing all that air in there

Is yours on a 3.9l V6?

I just want to make sure I dont get one too big, because how far the engine is set back.

Justin - I had a K&N round filter on my old 95 CC 4x4 3.9L V6. I used an edelbrock 10" round air hat..it was enclosed on top, silver in color. The filter I used was not 10" round, it was slightly smaller like 9 3/4" or something, it fit nicely in the air hat, when i screwed it down, it didn't move. I could not get the 10" to fit flat so I went with the one a little smaller in size.

I did notice better throttle response, otherwise not much in the way of gains or loses. I also did not have a scoop, just the stock hood.

If you want to do this set up, let me know. I kept the K&N filter I used. I have less than 20k miles on it and it was cleaned twice (once and then i cleaned it after i removed it and traded the truck in on my current 2002 QC 4x4. I'm willing to part with the filter for cheap. I paid around $40 for it.

Justin, what year is your truck? if you have a Gen III, 97-04 you won't be able to use a 14" round filter. it won't fit. youi'll have to go with a 10" round. someone bought me a 14" and i can;t use it on the dak. it'll go on my project car.

I've been kicking this around for a while, about what's better a K&N round filter sitting on the TB sucking in lots of air (probably hot air)no hood scoop or getting an airhat and getting a setup closer to stock. I've a 95 which had the old air hat(ugly), took it off and switched to the K&N described above. Larry says the K&N (KNN-57-1509-1) from Summit will fit with slight modifications. So I'm thinking I'll be getting less air but cooler air. The question is whether volume is more important than temperature and would the temp be that much cooler with the new set up.

i forgot about another filter i've seen poeple use. it's made by Edelbrock. the Proflow, it's triangular in shape and sets right on the TB. it's washable just like a K & N. not very big but looks really nice.

oh yeah, when i changed out the stock air box for the 10"round air hat on my old 95, I had to change the bolt. I opted to replace the bolt which required removing the TB and replacing the gasket vs cutting it off while on the truck.

daddio, any links to the edelbrock proflow? I googled it but came up with a fuel injection system of the same name. I've been looking for the triangular shaped set up for a while. Thanks.

The round one on the link Daddio posted is the same I had. I picked mine up from Advance.

When i traded the truck in I left it on there with the filter that came with the kit. I kept the K&N filter.

Thanks Daddio. I'm assuming that the 2 5/8" airhorn type will fit on my '00. Yes/no? And yes it does look sharp.

you're welcome. i don't think the 2-5/8" is what you need. i think you'll need the 5-1/8". i haven't measured mine but it's for sure bigger than 2-5/8". measure across the top of your tb to make sure. that pro-flow was first made B.I.(before injection) so they list 2bbl and 4 bbl

Just installed the Edelbrock ProFlo. Some minor relocation of the PVC tube near the throttle linkage was about the only snag. Nice to have all that space with the airbox now gone. Thanks again daddio.

I guess for me after reserching this issue and not pleased with the AirRaid "cold air" intake, Im gonna go with the ram air hood from suncoast creations. It's fully functional and looks nice, It's alittle pricy with having to purchase the air filter kit along with the hood but thats what the credit card is for.
