Subject: NTK o2 sensor connector

I ordered a rear O2 sensor for my '98 3.9L. well, I got it, took the old sensor out and compared them..scratched my head..and realized that the conectors are different. the new sensor had a female end and the old one was male. I even double checked the truck harness and the truck is female in the rear...that sounded funny..anyways, I double checked the part numbers with NGK and they said I had the right one. they might have put the wrong sensor in the right box, but they went and looked at another one with same part number. that was a female also, so I'm like WTF? I even pulled the front sensor out and that one was female. thinkin maybe they sent me the front one but that didnt seem to be the case either as the numbers on the hex nut of the sensor didnt match either of the ones she had in her hands.

SO, my question is..
Does anyone know if their rear O2 sensor has a male or female connector? maybe my truck is different because its a 98, I know there's slight differences between the years. the chick gave me the number to the tech support but they were already closed yesterday, so i'll call them today and see if I can't figure this out. thanks in advance for any info.

Did you buy the truck new or used ?? if used somebody might of did a sh!ty job in replacing old sensor just a thought have seen in the garage many of times ? If thats the case you might have to get original pigtail end rewire it to new sensor and I would double check YOURSELF! that you gave them all the correct info. 1 number or letter in prefix you can screw yourself up have seen it and done it myself because going to fast with my work from time to time GOOD LUCK!!

thanks pete. I bought it used but the connector is definetly a female on the truck. I wonder if I could use longer pins to connect the two females?

I replaced both my sensors in my 97 recently. They are both male connectors into female plugs on the truck. The rear has two aligning tabs 90 degrees apart and the front has the alignment tabs at a different angle, so you can't swap the two with each other.

You got an odd duck there.

I replaced mine this past weekend, the connectors on the new ones didn't quite match, So I cut the wires, used some butt connectors and the stock connecters off the old O2's. just matched the colors and wrapped with electric tape.

The only time I have seen this is if you got
a califoria emissions truck

Than we used the old plug soldered the wires
and used shrink rap

There are 4 wires
1 sensor ground
2 sensor signal
3 ASD voltage
4 ground

The 4 wire on these trucks are a heated sensor
this brings them up to operating temp faster for
emission purposes

I would use my old sensor's connector except that it was a universal connector and was part of the problem to begin with. the pins on it arent sturdy and can be pushed out when plugging it in, and you cant tell once you put the two connectors together. I got an idea tho...I'll buy the front o2 sensor and then use the male connector from the old front sensor to splice with my new sensor. I'm sure theres somethin a lil better then that..I wonder if I could buy a sensor for a different model truck that has a male connector? I still havnt talked to the tech because the phone line is always busy when I call and they close at 5pm est. thanks for the info guys. always appreciated.

Maybe go to a junkyard, and cut the connectors off you need. Probaly cost little or nothing to do that.

Wrong, I did not realize this until later. I just modified it to fit. I have not had a problem. I felt stupid afterwards, but as long as it works right that is all that matters.

Dont know if the truck was smashed but I'm not the first owner. believe I'm the 3rd. anyway, I dont think the sensors were mixed up. weird the a lot of people have had to modify their sensors to work with their truck. I still havnt talked to a tech. I'm definetly gonna call them today before 5 if I get out of work on time. hopefully they can shed some light on this. I'll post back and let you guys know. thanks again

Boomer sorry have'nt got back to you make sure your truck has the coorect connector, I mean to be sure your truck is'nt California emissons because my 02' is and they definelty have different pigtails , when I changed my 02's I was unaware that my truck was California emisson, and if not careful seeing this you might damage the OEM connector if it is the correct one. I almost destroyed mine if I wouldnt look at it carefully sometimes not good enough most of time. Then I see you think it was in a a wreck it sounds like someone did sh!ty job repairing and selling off to you not knowing what you bought I hate assho!es like that Larry could tell you the same being in the field like myself seen alot of bullsh!t mechanics thats what I call the true backyard mechanic good enough to keep your MIL lamp off sell it and give it to next and so on ... Check your local junkyards the might have what you need instead of paying out your a!s from a dealer or have it repaired there Good Luck...

If there is one thing I really dispise its someone
cutting up a wire harnass I see some real butcher
jobs

When I see things like that I don't even want to
work on them at all

Any good mech should put things back the way they
should be not cobble it togather to get it out the
door

I would try to get the correct plugs either order
new from dealer or from junk yard and make things
right that is what I do

The plugs and pins new are not that expensive.

I never cut any factory plugs I go to radio shack
find plugs or pins or make them never cut anything

Even simple things like a msd instal I will not
cut the plug of but find something to plug in
IAT relocation same thing find something to plug
in to extend wires never cut a factory plug off

I know many that just cut things off but with a
little thought you can plug into any factory plug

The MSD I use a big paper clip cut to length and
solder a wire on the home made pin and plug in
to exsisting coil plug

NEVER
NEVER
EVER
Cut the factory plugs off

thanks shoe, how did you modify yours? thanks pete, appreciate all info.

so larry, you think I could do what you did with the plug? just use a big paper clip to make pins to connect the 2 female plugs? I'll have to go to a radio shake and see what they got. and if my truck is california emissions how do I find out for sure that it is? the connectors look exactly the same between the front and rear sensors. I wonder if NGK has o2 sensors for the california trucks. I didnt get around talkin to a tech yesterday so maybe I'll quit procrastinating and actually do it today. hopefully I solve this mystery soon.

Boomer go to NGK.com put your info. in after getting looking for the O2 sensors you need they do show pigtail pictures that might be helpful but I dont think they sell just the harness you'll have to buy the whole sensor might cost a little more but the headache will disappear and you can get back to happy truckin' Good
Luck...

Like Larry was saying never cut the OEM pigtail but somebody before you did and I would as well as our buddy LARRY would I would restore it back to the orginal pigtail what the truck came with a little time but happier days ahead if you leave that botch job someone did before you will turn into unknown problems that could arise
