Subject: IAT relocate and mileage

I could be wrong as i have not checked actual mileage yet but my truck seems to consume more gas by doing this mod. seems it would make sense beings it's reading cooler air and running richer to compensate. I filled up tonight and will check mileage at next fill up. just wanted to see if anyone else has crappy gas mileage with this mod as well. Aside from that it made very nice improvements with power and idling. would the 180 thermo cause worse gas mileage too?

It sounds like your o2 sensor is lazy

The air fuel ratio will increase rich how ever
give it 50 to 200 miles if it shows no improvement
replace the o2

The computers will show the best mileage and
performance between 180 185

I would also get a scan free at autozone and
besure your running 180 most of the full flow
thermostats will run around 170 to cold and
will hit gas mileage

This is because the org thermo is a metered flow
design

a reg stant 195 will run 183 185 in these motors
unless you live where its always warm going to
a full flow 180 is not a good idea

the 180 thermo was an auto zone thermo, whatever brand that is. couldn't find the robert shaw. i have noticed that since installing the thermo my slight pinging has subsided.

Larry, i went to autozone and they said their scanner will not tell temp readings for thermostat. no way am i taking it to the dealer for a scan. all they'll do is tell me how much damage i'm doing by running these mods, blah blah blah!! and i'll pay for their outrageous labor fee. i'm considering just getting the stant 195 since you said you know it runs at the temp range it should be in these trucks unless you know what the thermo's from auto zone run, think it was their duralast brand and don't know if it's full flow or metered, i didn't do my homework!

I did do another mod i haven't heard to many talk about, it might not even be beneficial or considered a mod but wonder if it affects the gas mileage. I cut a length of 3" tubing i had from an old cold air intake from another vehicle and fit it between the air box and the airhat and fastened it with fernco fittings. I was curious to see if the factory tubing with all the ribs in it had any effect versus a smooth tube on the inside. I could swear it made a difference but seemed like the gas guage was moving faster than normal. that was why i questioned the IAT mod.

before IAT mod i was getting about 20mpg after a full tune up about 2 weeks ago. after the IAT mod and factory tubing back on i'm getting about 20.8 im putting the smooth tube on now and will check mileage tomorrow after work and see what it is.

when is the appropriate time to check mileage. do you run a whole tank of gas or can you check it in the first 5 gallons you burn off. it's cheaper to top off then to burn the whole tank and fill up. the truck would do the same mpg regardless of the tank level or is this false?

the last thing i have to do is get the NGK plugs, running the stock ones right now and only complaint is the slight ping when pulling out. but if the NGK is better, i'm all about better and still afordable.

Any changes can take upto 200 miles to learn the
change

They must have used a code only scanner just about
any good shop will have a scanner and can read
temp

The org thermostat was a 195 metered flow design
a full flow 180 will run cold they begain to open
around 160 full open at 180

the reg stant begains to open at 175 full 195
and will run almost perfict 185 in these motors

If you live were it gets cold dont use a 180
