My 2000 dakota is slow to start, it cranks quite a few times before it starts, but then it runs fine. the fuel pressure before starting is zero. pressure builds when it cranks and then starts. the pressure is about 10 psi less than the book spec. when I turn it off, the pressure slowly drops to zero. I checked the injectors and they do not leak after turning off the truck.

Question: should the fuel pressure remain hi after turning off the truck?? If so, what would cause the drop, the fuel pump or pressure regulator.

pressure should hold for a while. sounds like the check valve in the fuel pmup assy is leaking.

quick fix, turn the key to on and wait a few seconds until turning to start.

long term fix, replace fuel pump assy.

I took the advice from someone on this board about two years ago that said to turn the key, but wait about 3 seconds before cranking. It has helped greatly, and my car rarely takes longer than a second to start now.
