Message:
My son's '97 Dakota with 3.9/auto will start but won't idle. It's acting like it's got a big vacuum leak - like an EGR valve is stuck open. The pcv is operating fine. Do these engines even have a EGR valve and if so where is it located? Or, is there another problem with the engine?

If it won't idle, it's most likely the idle air controler on the back side of the throttle body facing the firewall. It needs to be removed and cleaned.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Problem is solved. My son found a bad vacuum hose on front of the throttle body that I missed yesterday. We replaced it and the motor runs like a champ once again.

Thanks for your input.

Anyway

the egr was discontinued on the mag motors in 1996

the new 3.7 and 4.7 they brought them back

If you want your truck to run good 92 to 95 mags
the egr must work good

besides emissions it also cools down cyl temps

here again do not mess around these valves are
ballanced to the motor and only the mopar
replacement should be used
$92
comes with valve, transducer, gasket and new bolts
when they become lazy your truck will become
slugish I recomend 100,000 miles replace it

can effect performance big time, idle quility and
gas mileage

I have same problem with same engine except mine seems temp. related (happens when engine is warm and in cold weather). Have put new intake air temp. sensor and no change. Have put new air filter, pcv, breather and no change. Have cleaned the idle control valve, and.... still no change. Will check the vaccum hoses next.
