got to work today and smelled something burning like brakes or something. I got out and the left front wheel was burning hot and smelled like the metallic in brakes. It was so hot i could hardly touch the rim. when i took my foot off the brakes the truck wouldn't move and when i accelerated it was like something holding it back. First thing i thought was the hub bearing but there is no play or wobble plus no grinding when turning left or right. I went back to the truck at break time and jacked it up and then the wheel was spinning freely after it cooled. could the caliper freeze up and then just release itself? those hub bearings aren't cheap either! anyone experience this. I greased the caliper bolts when i got home and so far it hasn't froze up again but something just doesn't seem right in the front end.

You've got a stuck caliper. Most likely the rubbing of the pads is causing enough heat for it to start binding, then as they cool, it releases. Most likely culprit is either water in the brake fluid causing the caliper piston to stick or the slides are binding not allowing the caliper to move freely so that the pads don't have hard contact with the rotor. Most likely your inner pad will be worn more than the outer.

I went through the same thing on my 4x4 98 dakota. It was the hub bearing, in my case. You will not feel any play in the wheel if you have torsion bars and not springs, because of the way the vehicle is suspended with torsion bars. To test for play in the hub bearing, you first have to jack up the car, then place an additional jack underneath the lower control arm at the ball joint. Jack up the lower control arm at or near the ball joint, just enough to take the torsion bar pressure off the the hub. Then you can test for play in the hub bearing. Otherwise the torsion bar will prevent you from checking for movement.

i have springs, its 2wd. I greased the caliper sliders and so far hasnt happened again. im pretty sure it isn't the hub bearing. i jacked it up when i got home and checked for play and there was none. also was spinning freely and no grinding. no unusual noises when turning sharp left or right either. how would water get in the brake lines and would you see it in the brake fluid resovoir? i forgot to mention as well that when i took the wheel off i noticed some little pieces of fresh asphalt pebbles from earlier in the day when was driving through an area they were repaving? I wonder if one of those little chips could have jammed up the sliders or something.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic meaning it sucks in water or moisture from the air. Over time it becomes contaminated with water and the water is heavier so it settles to the bottem down in the calipers and pistons. Thats why they tell u once u open a bottle of brake fluid it cant be stored and to change your brake fluid in your truck 1 every 2 years. DOT 5 is glycol-based and sucks in alot of water quite quickly. If it does it again replace the caliper and change all brake fluid
