I have a 93 Dodge Dakota that will run fine for a short time (1 mile or so), then if I come to a stop and begin to accelerate the engine will miss badly and almost shut off. I first noticed the problem on the higway when I had a sudden loss of power and couldnt get back over 55 mph. Since I have replaced fuel filter, sparkplugs, wires, dist. cap, and rotor, but it is still doing the same thing. Also, it idles perfectly in park, and I can bring it up to 3-4000 RPM and hold it there without the engine missing at all. It seems the problem starts only when engaged in drive. I would really appreciate any info. Thanks.

what if you go full throtle? does it still miss or does it accel without missing? sounds like teh same prob i ahd when my O2 sensor stopped working. also, it seemed like there was a certain spot in the throtle it was the worst that it almsot cut off or missed more than everywere else. check to see what it does at full throtle n if it accels fine and dosent miss, then come back n let us no.

I gave it full throttle several times and it did not miss at all and acceleration was fine also. I let it idle for a soild 10-15 minutes without noticing any missing or skipping.

same prob i had, def check to make sure the o2 sensor is still hooked up and the wire didnt get cut sumwere or is shorted. if it is, get another, should b like 70 or so bucks at local auto store. The heat from the exhaust could of finaly got the to wires or even metled them if you didtn protect the wires sumhow. that or it jsut might b clogged or old. they should also have the socket set to change it. if u do it in the parking lot they will let u borrow for free. if u tak ethem u have to leave deposite till u bring them back. any ?'s let us no

o, also. once the new one is in, make sure u unhook the battery or reset the computer sumhow. changing the sensor may also get you better gas milage ;), but dont expect a 5mpg gain or nothin like that.

CHECK FAULT CODES. How many times does this have to be said? It should be the first step. They are not 100% definitive, but usually lead to the solution.

Thanks for all of the responses. I think that I am going to get a new O2 sensor and put it in this weekend and see if that will do it. Also, I have checked the fault codes, but it has been really difficult to figure out what code it is putting out. When viewing the flashing check engine light, it is giving two pauses, then it gives the correct pause for the test to stop. There was a total of 9 flashes other than the "5, pause, 5" to stop the test. So I cant tell if it is as 27, 36, 45, 63 or 72 code. Kind of crazy. I will let you know how it goes, thanks everyone.

Easy way to find out if its mechanical or computer problem is to unhook the battery for 10 mins and hook it back up. If it drives around after u unhooked the battery without a miss its electronic so chances are O2 sensor if it still missing might be mechanical. Pulling the battery resets the ECM and it runs on closed loop for a short time. Allows the computer to learn how to run the truck again

Before you piss away money on the O2 sensor that might not be needed, go to Autozone and get a free fault code check. They will go out in the parking lot with you and show you the codes.

Yeah, I was holding off on putting a new O2 sensor in because its about $70. I plan on going to get a fault check tomorrow, so we will see what happens. Thanks for the advise.

well, you coudl do the "on off" method and get the trouble codes, takes all of 15 seconds. if u get code 21 it means its the o2 sensor. going sumwere mayb b easier because sumone does it for u but doing it urself can also teach u sumthing.

here is the site to explain the codes and how to check. if you dont get any codes from the computer, THEN its time to go sumwere to have them checked.
http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html

if your like me, u rather do it urself n not wait on people at the auto store to take there god given time when youve got sumwere to be. bad experience.

If you dont understand what codes are flashing up, get it checked at autozone like bob said. or you could be a dumbazz and just start replacing crap like other people suggest.

Well, it turns out that the problem was the o2 sensor. Put a new one in on Wednesday and haven't had a problem since. Thanks for all of the tips! Take care.
