Auto tranny? http://www.blackshireserver.net/OhioDakotas/docs/Crankshaft%20Position%20Sensor.doc

Manual tranny...similar to the above...slight differences in sensor location and you'll need a sensor made for a manual tranny.

if you cut the metal like the diagram shows, it will then allow you to slide the whole assembly down closer to the oil filter. It's only like a quarter inch difference but appartently enough to change the timing. I did the mod but you can't run stock heat range plug or you'll get lots of pinging. It gave me great bottom end but off the line i wasn't thrilled. Also did great MPG gas wise but seemed almost a little bit slower off the line like i said.

yes, you may get a little pinging depending on how much you move the sensor. try it. if it's a problem you can always move it back.

I'm running my sensor moved over as far as I could get it without modifying the bellhousing (if you're really into this mod, you can grind away a little of the bellhousing and move it even further), with stock heat range plugs, and 180*F thermostat, and regular gas. No pinging at all.

it must be a manual tranny thing. i moved mine over as far as i coud without modding the bellhousing. with a 195 tstat and 87oct, under hard accel mine will ping. if i don't dog it, it won't ping.

i think the manual trucks have a little more timing built into the programming than the auto's.

Mine's an auto...a sh!tty one...but an auto nonetheless. I think the cooler thermostat is what's keeping me from pinging, but I did this mod after I changed the thermostat.

I honestly didn't notice much of a difference...my friend thought it seemed like it had a lil more low-end, but that's bout it. My gas mileage was still sh!tty...not sure if it's any less sh!tty...but yeah.

ok, what years would u say this mod would work on? i have an 88 and there isnt a hole on the top of the transmission like in the tutorial. ive rebuilt the transmission recently so i no there isnt one there unless im blind. did they use a different method than this? i searched autozone for it for my year and there was no results but they did have a throttle position sensor. is that what was used instead?

I believe in order to get the timiming advance, you have to cut it...otherwise it won't be able to slide over. I'm not sure what year they started using crankshaft position sensors but it sounds like yours might be too early of a model. The throttle position sensor is a completely different sensor from the CPS...although there IS a TPS mod out there...but it doesn't advance timing. It helps to cure sluggish off-idle response I believe.
