I have checked my fuel pressure and I'm reading at 37-41 psi. I've read in former posts that I should be reading at 45-55. I have a '92 3.9 with 167k. I'm sure it's time for a filter change, but I'm wondering if that will fix my pressure prob or should keep looking after I change it.

You [it] should be perfectly fine.
Unless it cuts out when tank is below half full..
39-41 is perfectly ok.
[filters] are in tank (part of ) fuel pump
assembly..

Well the fact that I just finished changing my fuel filter makes me wonder if we are talking about the same thing. The filter I changed runs along the frame under the driver side door.

Stephan, some filters are on frame others are in tank on the end if the fuel pump. The part stores say this is sold as a unit($170-$190)! I don't know why, seems like an easy filter to changeAFTER YOU DROP THE FUEL TANK! What kind of weed are these engineers smoking anyway! Take a Sawsal and very carefully cut a neat 10" hole thru the bed right above the pump. Don't cut the tank K!? The piece can be replaced afterwards, can't be seen under a bed liner, and works like a million bucks.

I had to replace my pump while on a trip. Luckily I was a half mile from a dealer. They unbolted the bed and two guys lifted one side whle a third removed the pump.
Filter on my '92 is on L frame rail. there may also be a sock on the pump.

92 93 had filter in line and also a return system

in 94 they went into the tank and no return line

This in my opinion was a very bad move placing the
filter at the bottom of the pump assy inside the
gas tank

If you check the parts stores some do sell just
the filter but you still have to remove the
pump to replace it bad bad idea

A return fuel system was also a better setup

37 to 41 thats ok a little low but ok 40 pound
minimum when you drop below 40 your gas mileage
goes with it

I run an aftermarket holly, external adjustible
regulator at 50 psi with the stock in tank filter
stock reg removed

Yes, I know some of you guys will think its a sin to mod. a pefectly good bed. But it's a truck, not my first love and when your on the side of the road, it's snowing and 5 above 0 you'll wish you could just reach down and unscrew the pump( with my fiberglass cap it's like being in a garage!). Good luck taking the bed off.

Cutting hole in the floor is what I did on my
Caravan after having previously having to remove the tank. Tack welded a couple of strips on the plug and used some silicon to seal it. If I ever have another problem it will be a piece of cake to remove the pump or address a leaky hose.

It definately isn't for everyone but it is far from a dumb idea. On my Dakota I would opt for removing the bed.

J and J, where is the stock regulator and can it be adjusted? if not, where can I get an after market like yours? Do the newer models have a higher psi reg. that I can jack at a junk yard?
