Subject: dak acting crazy.........?
IP: Logged

Message:
My '96 3.9 is acting weird. When I start it, it runs for about 30 seconds then shuts down. It's very hard to re-start it. It will backfire several times then start. It will act like it's starving for fuel while I'm driving. As long as I keep the throttle reved-up, it's ok.

It doesn't do it everytime. Sometimes it's like it's fine, then it will cut-out while driving.

I've replaced the dist. cap, rotor button and coil.

What else? please help!

Daveo

Have you cleaned the Idle Air Control ?
Back of throttle body..
Also possible ( does it act up more if gas tank is below half ) = dirty fuel filters on pump assy.. = have to change fuel pump assembly.
Although someone previously mentioned "replacing
the filters " , but source of parts unknown !!!

No, I haven't cleaned the AIC. I'll do that first.

Is there any inline fuel filters, or just the one in the tank with fuel pump assy?.

It does seem to happen more often at 1/2 tank or less though.

I'll get the battery checked too.

Thanks all.

My truck was like that after having the computer reset. I changed the upstream O2 sensor and now the truck runs great ( I had also replaced the IAT sensor ). The upstream Sensor is about $55 at Red Rooster if you have one, and it isn't the dreaded ( for whatever reason ) Bosch Brand, though I can't remember the name ATM.

I replaced the idle air control valve today. The old one fell apart when I tried to clean it. I thought that would fix it but, no can do!

It IS a little better but still doing the same.

Mike, thanks, I'll replace the o2 sensor. It's probably never been replaced.

Many thanks and I'll keep you all posted.
Dave

check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail. not exactly sure but i think it should be around 45psi. if it isn't i would look at the fuel filter/pump assy.

If it does it on a cold start, it's NOT the O2 sensor. It has no effect on operations for the first 2 minutes or so at cold start.

Bob, yes it mainly does it on a cold start. Thanks!

daddio, Yeah, I'm hoping it's not the fuel pump assy. Getting costly. I will check pressure today. Thanks!

daveo, did you have the battery load tested. autozone and those guys will test for free. a weak battery will cause a rough/ no idle condition. when the battery is weak the pcm will lose the idle memory and have to re-learn it at cold start. hence, the rough/ no idle condition.

on extremely cold mornings my truck idles rough for the first few seconds until the battery voltage comes back up. my battery is on it's last legs. it's the 7yr old original battery it came with.

It's still acting funny. now it will not start. I've replaced....
dist. cap and rotor button
coil
idle air control valve
spark controller (inside dist.)
coil wire
Battery is good, only about 1 yr. old.

It's getting fuel. when cranking it will load up the cylinders. You can smell the gas. I pulled a plug and it was saturated. The plugs look great (only 1 yr. old.)
My dad said his chevy did the same thing and it was carbon build-up. about $600.00 to fix. Is this common on the daks?
I'll take any and all suggestions.
Thanks,
daveo

Hey, try checking the engine fuse/resistor. Im sorry im not quite sure what the name of it is called because i had the dealer test and replace for me. I had pretty much the same problem with my Jeep. It stumped the crap out of me and was as simple as a 10 dollar fuse on the side of the vehicle. It was the first time i had to take my jeep in for something that i could not fix. Oh and test before you replace...save alot of money and you will learn bunchs

My 92 did the same thing, sounds like the ECM temp sensor, located next to the thermostat housing. Need to revove the "A" shaped A/C support bracket to access. VERY hard to see, will likely have to move a wire harness to see it.
Note: This is NOT the engine temp sending unit for the dash gauge.

Man, the saga continues. Tonight on the way home from work, it started jerking real bad. like it was cutting off and on! Then it backfired a couple of times, and reved way up, then took off. All on the interstate at about 60 mph.

Then, the headlights would go off, then back on, then off, then on. What the hell???
My dak has lost it!! This is getting too wierd for me!!
I think it's time to trade it!!

I had similar problem yesterday, but my truck was hooked up to a scanner thru the OBD2 port. Would barley start and ran like crap for a few seconds when it would start. turned out the scanner wasnt connected all the way or maybe it was pulling on the port and messin with the computer. I'd check the connections under the dash where that port is. hope this helps.

daveo, one thing that hasn't been mentioned. a splice in the wiring harness just below the Power Distribution Box, peel back the insulation and there is a 4wire to 1 wire splice that gets corroded over time. redo the splice after cleaning all the wires. best to solder it then re-tape it. i'm not sure exactly what year daks had this splice but it could be worth a shot.

Boomer, thanks. I'll check that port.

daddio, I'll check the splice, but where's the Power Dist. box located?

I think 96 is the last year of those "splice" issues...and if I remember correctly, your symptoms sound very similar to the issues the corroded splice causes. I think Daddio may have nailed it...

I ruled out the IAC pretty quickly while reading this...as well as the battery. While yes, they do affect the IDLING, I've never heard of them causing backfiring? Something else that it could be...maybe...someone correct me if I'm way off base. Crank position sensor. If it's reading the timing incorrectly, couldn't it make the engine go apesh!t?

I'm leaning toward that splice though...

Power Dist box (fuse box?)...located under the hood. If it's the fuse box, on my 1998 it's located on the driver's side right behind the battery. If it's the PCM or whatever...that's on the passenger side (I think?).

I had the backfiring and the cutting out of power after the computer was reset by Autozone ( they apparently won't do that anymore, at least up by me ). After replacing the O2 sensor, my driveability is back, along with my fuel mileage, and I don't get the 'surge' of power at 3000rpm anymore, smooth as silk.

I picked up a scanner for myself ( one that reads real time data as well as the codes - actron 9145 ) and watched the truck idle. My timing would jump from 14 to 19.5 degrees at a constant idle of 750 rpm. I've noticed recently too that my truck will jump the idle briefly if it sits idling a while. I've already replaced the IAC and cleaned the back of the throttle body where the IAC sits, so I know I can rule that one out. My next job is the cap, rotor and wires...dunno how old they are and I suspect possibly some carbon arcing.
