Won't shift into DRIVE? Or OVERdrive?

If it won't shift into OVERdrive...it's fine, it's supposed to do that until it reaches a specific temperature. Otherwise it could damage the transmission. Just enjoy hearing your engine at 2500 RPMs while cruising across town til it gets warm.

AS above - only other thing is - has fluid been changed ? -Needs ATF-4 to work properly , especially in cold weather.
Dexron , or "universal" fluid don't cut it ..

Thanks for replies..I did go for servicing a couple weeks ago, to have fluid and pan cleaned but mechanic said the fluin looked clean, he didn't think i needed. Guess i'll go ahead now and do it anyway. Only other thing I can say is, when I initially start truck after its been sitting awhile, let truck warm up,put into drive,It reponds almost as if emergencybrake is on, which it's not then theres like a vibrating i guess dragging type noise, underneath truck midsection then drive engages..I did notice truck temp.gauge takes quite awhile to get in warm area of gauge also..once driving though it goes up pretty quick to proper setting..Any other clues to my prob..here? Thanks again for intial replies.

"looked clean" ... there is your first problem ... also make sure you have the right fluid ATF+4 .... NO OTHER TYPE ..... if you use anything other than ATF+4 you could cause clutch chatter and other problems... how long has it been since your last fluid change ? did they adjust the bands the last time ?

Okay yeah...THAT doesn't sound so normal...lol

I've also heard Amsoil ATF works great in our tranny's...and Valvoline I believe now makes an ATF +4 for them (rather than buying the Mopar brand through the dealership). Although, Mopar brand is now available at a lot of Walmarts...so it may actually be cheaper than the Valvoline in some places.

My tranny does act very differently on cold days compared to warm...it will feel like it's dragging somewhat til it warms up. Dunno why but I'm guessing it's because of the fluid being cold and thick and causes the gears to drag a bit before spinning freely. Once it warms up, all the problems go away...either way though, yours sounds like it's more than just the standard effects of cold temperature. May wanna take it to another mechanic...preferably someone who specializes in transmissions.

it takes a little driving to warm up the fluid
also your rear ends fluid is cold and needs to
warm

I start my truck when its 10 to 30 below 0 let it
warm for 5 to 10 min than stay under 30mph for
4 to 5 miles to let things warm up a bit yes very
stiff in that kind of temps

We use
mopar +4
Amsoil universal
redline syn

All work well in these trans also the valvoline
+3 and +4 when customers bring it in also seams
to work well and the +3 is $1.69 Qt from carquest

the comp must see around 100 degrees befor it will
lockup it seams to very between 100 to 150 on
these trucks everyone is diff

my 95 4x4 around 120

on the cold days give it some time things break
when cold LOL
