What class hitch is the rear bumper. I need to rent a dolly to tow a 74 Ford Bronco and I'm want to make sure the bumper can handle it.

Thanks,
Stu.

bumper rating should be stamped on the bumper most of them are 200lbs tongue weight, 2k lbs max trailer.

i'd get a receiver hitch if i were you. unless you're only going a couple of blocks.

prolly not so good to be doing with a v-6 dakota that does nto even have the tow package
as posted above, i wouldnt go more than a few blocks/miles
you can do it fin, jsut dont get yourself in too much traffic

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

The towing package on the daks came with 3.91
gears a class A hitch and a trans cooler

I once haulled a 6,500 pond trailer with my
dak could not go over 45mph or it would sway bad
stopping was also a problem but I only had to
go like 25 miles with it

But I needed the crane to dig a big hole LOL or
I would have never done that LOL it was nuts
on ice and snow coverd roads no highways all
back roads

3000 3500 max with a class A maybe 4000 thats it
2000 with the rear bumper

sway bars a shift kit and trans cooler is a must
if you plan on pulling a heavy triler a lot

Larry - The tow package definitely does not include the lower gears, at least for the v8's - that is a seperate option. I'd be surprised if the package was not the same for the v6's. They might commonly include the gear option with the tow package for the v6; but it should be listed seperately on the Monroney sheet. It's not at all unusual to see a v8 with the tow package and the 3.55 gears.

While trailer sway bars will help, the key to hauling without sway is proper load distribution. The tongue weight should equal about 10% of the total. When people load a trailer neutrally so as not to put much weight on the rear of the truck, that will definitely cause problems with sway. A load distributing hitch will help if that is too much weight for the rear of your truck; they usually include at least one sway control bar.

I'm not going to be going that far. Maybe 3 miles? The interior of the truck is gutted and most of the body panels and the top are unbolted so I can take them off and make two trips to keep the weight down. I will also be towing it with a dolly not a full trailer so that will keep the weight down a little bit too.
It's a Dakota Sport standard cab V6 5spd shortbed if any of that makes a difference.

Thanks again for all the info.

Stu.

Ah yes

just like the local dealer does

tow package listed but all they did was put the
class A hitch on

The tow package from dealer has 3.91 in the daks
full size 3.92 if it don't it did not come from
the factory with the tow package just a dealer
rip off

Also all the factory tow packages came with the
trans temp sensor installed reg trucks obd1 did
not have this sensor installed obd2 have this
incorpirated into the pressure sensor

Larry - I know you are very helpful and knowledgable here, but with all due respect, the tow package does not include the lower gears. I have the factory tow package on my truck and it came with 3.55 gears, and have heard of other trucks like this. The lower gears are a seperate option. The tow package does include heavy duty charging though, as well as the other stuff you've mentioned.

FWIW

I ordered factory tow on my '03 QC 4WD, not really knowing all that much, and my truck came with 3.92s. My dad commented on the increased fuel consumption, and the dealer told him those gears come w/ the package.

Maybe, or maybe some were just built with that combination of options. I can say for sure it was not included in my year ('00); nor is it currently included (if you check with Dodge.com this can be verified). Detroit has been trying hard to maximize profits for some time; it would be very odd for them to charge extra for this option in '00, then give it away in '03, and then be charging extra for it again in '07 !

Ms Scooter - how long did it take for you to get your truck from the factory once you ordered it ?
