Subject: Engine clanking and running very bad
IP: Logged

Message:
I was driving and holding my speed at 35 mph when i heard what sounded like something flying apart then followed by clanking and everything shaking
I ease into the gas no change in sound i put it in neutral an glide to a stop. No change in sound no matter what gear i put it in.
I swaped the msd coil for my stocker no change its definently metal sounding and pops through intake upon initial start up. No smoke or puddles anywhere though. Im going to see if i can limp it home after i replace cap and roter, or maybe get a friend to pull me home.

Motor oil before this happened was getting dirty prematurely but before it happened it was running the best it ever has.
Any one have a clue what it might be and where i should start looking for the problem?
2002 quad cab 4x4 auto 3.9 v6.
Thanks

Thats always how it is. When they go out they go out when they are running great. Start it up. Listen to it. If it sounds like the rods are knocking then just shut it off. To see if it is coming from the bottom end. Take a rubber hose and put it to the oil pan. If it is loud there, but quiter if you put it to the valve covers then something is awfully wrong down there.

Maybe the timng chain jumped a tooth, might cause the backfiring and rough running.

I took the drivers side valve cover off since to me it sounded to be clanking from there.

My worst fear was relized. I dropped a valve on the number 3 cylinder.

I cant believe it... I only have just over 28,000 miles on it...

looks like it is under warranty.

suggesstion - take any speed components off --- so the car has not been modified by the user -you ----before you take it to the dealer. and didn't it happaen in normal driving, just started making noise.

some dealers will look for ways to get out of it
