My buddy's dad gave me an 88 4x4 3.9l that needed a transmission, witch i fixed of course, but at the same time i decided to do a little exhaust work, witch was probably my bigest downfall. He also had driven the truck and said it would fly, and i let him ride in it today, give it everything it had and he said it was sluggish and wasent the same at all. im thinking its because of the cheap exhaust parts i put on it, but i jsut wanted sum advice. I put a magnaflow high flow cat, which it said no backpressure which i thoguth was good until l8er finding out it wasent, and a 20 dollar Glasspack. The exhaust is pretty much straight pipe, but i watned to no if a simply put a decent muffler or cat on the exhaust system would i get some of my torque and HP back.I still want it loud, but The only time i can ever burn rubber is on drenched roads or on very tight corner. Ive done plugs n wires n all that stuff to see if i could get something back but i havent gotten anything really. Thnx

sorry but

Nothing wrong with the exhaust you used. Not sure why you think there is. If your talking back pressure, your in good shape. With a stock exhaust the highest it will measure is 1.5lbs in front of the cat. You do something to cause more and it gets hard on valves. There are a lot of guys with the misconseption you need back pressure. What you got on puts you in good shape cheap or not. This truck never had much power to it stock. The guy that gave it to you most likely liked the truck when it was working and he just thinks it was better.
