Subject: removing cat....
IP: Logged

Message:
Is there any loss of backpressure by just removing the cat?
I know it's illegal, but I live in a state that doesn't have inspections and any shop will cut it off and replace with a piece of pipe.

What problems will it create?
'96 dak 3.9 auto

Thanks,
Daveo

Go get a Carsound/Magnaflow High Flow cat...it's like $100 (including shipping), flows better than the stock one, makes the exhaust tone much deeper, AND it's legal.

...plus nobody on here will bitch you out for going THAT route. lol

96 I think only has 1 cat...like my 98 does...but if it's got 2 O2 sensors, it'll prolly throw codes and go apesh!t because the downstream O2 sensor won't be giving off the right readings. It'll prolly need an O2 sim to run correctly. If it's only got 1 O2 sensor before the cat...shouldn't be any problems as far as throwing codes and stuff. Can't speak on how it'll effect power, torque, gas mileage, etc...never done it.

"I live in a state that doesn't have inspections and any shop will cut it off and replace with a piece of pipe." And that shop risks being fined $20,000 and shut down. It's a felony, regardless of whether they get caught. Not every shop will risk it.

Just put a high-flow cat on it. Anyone can install one themselves.

I bought a HEDMAN "high flow" cat about 5yrs. ago, haven't had any problems. Was only $40-50, and needed clamps, and short scrape piece of pipe to make up difference in length of much shorter cat. (2 1/2")
Yes '96 has 1 cat, after "Y", and 3- O2 sensor (1 for each bank before "Y", and 1 after cat.
