Idiot lights are for, well, idiots. In this school for mechanics, they must surely instruct in the proper application of gauges for troubleshooting, eh?
kfdfsgn is right. Oil level would be the first logical thing to check.

first of all i am not an idiot. the classes i've had so far have been on rebuilding engines, transmissions, steering and suspension and breaks. just b/c i'm going to school does not mean i already know everything. please do not make me out to be dumb for asking. there is plenty of oil and no leaks.

just thought i'd bust your balls a bit. don't take it to heart. besides calling yourself cat, you'll really catch h*ll at a shop. just f-ing with you.

pull the oil press. sending unit install a oil/trans press. gauge. If I remember (broad spectrum) most manufactures will have the LOP light come on 8-12 psi.

possibly just replace the filter(clogged), oil pump(worn), relief spring(worn out)(or an idiot welded the plunger when tacking the pickup tube to the pump like on my buddy's truck), worst case bearings just worn(which will make that class that much more interesting) ***Rebuilding an engine 30-100 people have already taken apart is pretty lame, get NO real world experience.

If the pressure is above 8-12, and comes up with rpm, try replacing the sender. So, your out $5-15, and 20 minutes. Does the engine clatter? Maybe (high mileage, extreme conditions) just change viscosity.
Update when you check them out. Have you tried asking the teach. Most are just one of the guys, sick of getting dirty...

oh my gosh, you think?!?!?
What is this world coming to?
Figured it, but it's just another car guy in my book. Possibly just more attractive. Who cares I've worked with women before in the field, makes no difference, and you can still "bust their balls" thier chops, and generally give them a hard time just like one of the guys. (With exception to the usual female no-no's) Obviously they are a different breed that don't mind getting their hands dirty. So, welcome to the family, Cat.
Oh, and my mother-in-law goes by Kat (Kathy)

my name is cathy by the way. well as far as what filter is on it i'm not sure. it's my boyfriend's truck and i haven't had access to it yet. just going on what he tells me. as for the engine i rebuilt it was some guys in class who brought it in. also i am doing work on my engine. valve seat came out and bounced around combustion chamber but luckily didnt touch cylinder wall. i am used to getting my "balls busted" but remember boys i can bust yours better ;)
