well, I just bought an o2 simulator for now. the google ads on the side of the first page had the link I used. It said that the rear o2 sensor senses heat and since there is no cat to restrict the flow, even a little bit, the computer throws a code. so there's this thing you just screw on the end of your existing o2 sensor and then put the o2 sensor in the exhaust bung hole (cant believe I just said bung hole lol) well, when I get the sim and reset my pcm or whatever the hell its called, I'll post back and let everyone know how it goes. I do plan on getting a high flow cat just dont have the money since its christmas. thanks for your help again guys.

This is where a scanner would be handy. I just received mine today in the mail. I hooked it up to my wife's car and watched the O2 sensor perform as expected .. bounced from .1 to .9V. Awesome little tools.

I know I have an exhaust leak in my truck, I'm going to hook the scanner to it and see how it affects the 02 sensor. Then I'm going to repair the leak and check again.

a leak should not effect the o2

.1 to .9 thats good

a perfict o2 will go .1 to 1.02 volts

the best way to check them is with a scan tool
start cold and watch it

4.8 volt
1 min 3.8
2 min 2.8
3 min 1.8
after 3 min they should begain to flip flop
other than an ocilliscope this is the best way
to check them this is a perfictly working o2

a bad one will stay at sensor voltage while warming than flip flop after 3 to 4 min this
tells you its lazy and should be replaced

A scanner and a digital volt meter are 2 must have
tools for the guy who works on his own truck you
can check all sensors with the digitital volt
and ohm meter

you can check the IAT and engine temp sensor
on the bench with ohm meter a meat thermo and
a boil cup they should be within 200 ohm
threw out there range from cold to hot

the dist pickup and crank sensor can only be
checked with an ocilliscope taping into the
wire at the computer and watching the wave pattern

All others these 2 tools can check

ok, I just got the o2 simulator in the mail yesterday. Im gonna put it on today and see what that does for me the next week or so. I'm kinda disappointed in what exactly the simulator looks like. its like an extension for the o2 sensor, meaning that the o2 sensor screws into the simulator and the simulator screws into the original bung for the o2 sensor. the simulator is hallow and theres a small hole in the end that screws into the exhaust bung, so the o2 sensor is still gonna read the exhaust gases, its just out of the direct flow of it. looks like something you could make yourself, but as long as it works it was well worth the $17 total including shipping. i'll post back as soon as i get some results.

well, I put the sim on today. i thought there was a way to reset the PCM without taking off the negative battery cable. anyone know how? besides that, it was easy to put on, just like it described. hopefully this does somethin for me. maybe the computer wont be so confused since it won't read the actual flow. i'll post back as soon as i get some results.

Good luck.

"It said that the rear o2 sensor senses heat" This is not true. It senses the concentration of oxygen, just as the front one does. A clue is that for many vehicles, they are the same PN.

Sounds like you bought some snake oil. 8)

thats possible..but the o2 sensors for front and rear are different part numbers. only one way to find out sometimes right? just got to have balls (or stupidity) to try it! what can I say, I have both.

OK. It's your money. Just remember, there's a reason why it's called an "oxygen" sensor and not a heat sensor.

My wife's Camry has two different part numbers for upstream and downstream sensors. The only difference is the length of the harness and the clip to hold it to the underside of the car. It's the same sensor tip.

Larry - from everything I've been reading an exhaust leak can affect the o2 performance and cause slight changes in voltage readings. I was expecting to see my o2 behave more like the one in my wife's grand am, both are bosche. The o2 in her car was a nice smooth change from .1 to .9 (smooth as in increasting from .1 to .9 and decreasing from .9 to .1). the o2 in my truck was jumpy. As an example It would jump from say .2x to .4x and then the next time not jump but dispaly some reading in between .2x and .4x. same on the decreas in voltage.

The "how do i know when i need to replace my o2 sensor" articles i've been reading (some at auto shop websites) says to check for exhaust leaks and fix them before ruling that an o2 sensor was bad.

In the couple times i checked ,it heated up just fine. It's just that the voltage jumps around sometimes.

during cold weather i can definately tell there is an exhaust leak by checking under the truck and seeing the exhaust come out the pipe.

i just moved and need to get the garage organized better and get some boxes unpacked so i can get to all of my tools and actually park the truck in the garage so i can crawl under and check it out more.

well, the check engine light still comes on and goes off every now and then. and it seems like it runs a little rough right before it comes on so I'm thinkin that I really need a cap and rotor with the brass contacts and some new MSD 8.5 mm wires. hopefully that will stop the misfires.

oh, and I've noticed I'm getting a lil better gas mileage with the o2 simulator, but it's obviously not the reason I'm gettin misfires every now and then. I know a couple of you guys are going to tell me "I told you so" but sometimes you gotta see it for yourself, know what I mean?

well, I still havnt had the time to take the distributor cap off and check if theres moisture in there since its been wet and raining here in michigan lately. Ive come to the conclusion that it is probably not the o2 sensor but I do still have boshe sensors in. I'm going to order both front and rear NGK sensors along with some spark plugs. I've been lookin at getting some MSD 8.5 wires but damn those are expensive! I think I say them for 88 bucks! wtf? is that just for it saying MSD on it?? I checked the price of the 8mm Taylor wires and those are much cheaper. Like 45-50 bucks, somethin like that. I'd rather have the 8.5 but not for $90. I'm gonna start a new thread about wires. I'll post back to this when I get new o2 sensors and reset my PCM.

thats junk

Yes the rear sensor also reads oxy but not the
same way the front one is used

here's a clue on the simm's

B&G custom hemi flash for the paxon blowe shuts
the rear o2's off

stock comp with superchips blower program
we are using 2 simm's for the rear o2's or
every time you go under boost check engine
comes on

do they work yes only post cat not pre cat
and they will still pass emissions tests
lots of obd2 guys went this way because for
some reason the rear o2's just dont last long
why I don't know with the dodge trucks

other makes run fine
go figure

revisiting this again. I got my truck scanned yesterday. said downstream o2 sensor is bad, and #2 cylinder misfire. So I'm gonna pull that plug and check it out asap. it doesn't arc, not even under a load so I could have damaged it installing it. and I need to order my o2 sensors soon anyway. boshe is junk, dont buy it. at least their o2 sensors.

Everyone keeps saying that, but I've had one for 85K miles and 4 years, no problems, passes emissions as cleanly as when the vehicle was new, same gas mileage. Guess I just have better luck.
