ok i was looking at the sticker for my truck yesterday, and under one of the options it says lockup torque converter. what is it?

A lock-up torque converter is a solenoid-actuated clutch within the torque converter of your automatic transmission. When locked, there is a direct mechanical connection between the input and the output of the torque converter.
The lock-up can occur in 3rd gear when Overdrive is switched OFF, or in 4th gear when Overdrive is ON.
Experiment a bit. Next time you're thinking about it, count the shifts as you accelerate, moderately of course. You'll feel a shift from 1st to 2nd, from 2nd to 3rd, from 3rd to 4th, and then another one that causes your RPMs do drop a bit. That last one is the lockup.
There's nothing extra you need to do. It happens "automatically", so don't worry about it, just enjoy the ride.

It's for better fuel economy, lower engine RPMs, less wear. Usually it disengages during towing, as the heavy load could cause damage.

Most new cars have a lock up solonoid. You can tell with a simple test. As you are going down the highway, give the brake pedal a quick tap...just enough that the brake lights will go on, but not enough to engage the brakes enough to slow you down.

You should hear the engine RPM go up as the solonoid disengages. It's designed to kick in on a flat surface after travelling a short distance at a constant speed in top gear. It does not engage if the transmission detects a load ( going up a hill, or pulling a trailer ) or when the brake pedal is engaged.

It's good at lowering fuel consumption, but you need to worry about it failing and keeping the torque converter fully locked and sticking that way. Our '88 grand am had a faulty solonoid that would freeze after getting warmed up and would kill the engine when we came to a stop. It took me a while to figure this out ( as it was the newest technology in a car I had driven to date ) and ended up destroying the tranmission later down the road after I realized too late what the problem was. The easy short term fix is to disconnect the electrical connector on the transmission that operates the solonoid ( at least, it was that easy on the Pontiac ) to the detriment of lower fuel mileage due to higher operating rpm at speed.

chrysler started using lockup converters in the
late 70,s

There first atemps were not so great they were
hydrolic controled and had some probs

once they went to computer control all was well

As was said all for fuel economy under load they
will unlock when the vac drops to 3 to 4 pounds
and at a pre determined throttle position by the
computer called a down shift LOL

Hey Larry, that wouldn't be what the kids used to call "Passing Gear" back in the day, eh? LOL

My friends would talk about how the tranny would shift into "passing gear" when they'd goto 'pass another car' I'd always look at them with a puzzled look on my face like "what the hell are you talking about..passing gear?" Because I knew then that the transmission was just downshifting to a lower gear....heh.
