The y-pipe is simply the way you connect seperate cylinder heads into a single exhaust outlet. It has a slight scavenging effect, though not enough to consider really.

If you are talking the V6 motor, keeping the y-pipe seems to be considered the best bet for performance over going with true dual exhaust...likely due to most people using too large of pipe and losing backpressure.

True duals should be called "tuned" duals as you don't just slap 2 1/2 pipe from the front to the back because that was is on the truck from the factory.
