Would any body know why a dakota idles funny but not throw a code? I'm trying to figure this out. My truck sounds like it skips a beat but no code. I have been throwing parts at it and decided to ask the board here. If any body has any suggestions please let me know. I can list more if needed. I am just trying to get some leads. THX.

under what conditions? does it do it all the time? just when cold, first start, when hot?
could be anything from the battery to the IAC.

more info would help us solve the problem.

On start up and all the time. Can't go over 30 mph without the engine hiccupping. But on start up hicups aren't really there, or only subtle.

IAC and battery was replaced within the last 15K or so.

"more info would help us solve the problem."

Distributor is also new with cap and rotor. Spark plugs are pretty old - 20K or so. Not sure if they are the problem. Will check them today when I get back from work.

I'm not throwing any codes for EGR or 02 sensor. Both have been replaced in last two years.

"NO CEL at all? i didn't think an '89 had an IAC. This is TBI right?"

Sorry. It was a Idle Speed Control actuator that was replaced. Not a IAC.

I just pulled each spark plug and noticed a little of gas on a few of them after I tried a quick start up. I think thats normal on start up thou cold engine.

"i know more questions but i am trying to narrow it down."

I don't mind answering more questions. I appreciate the help.

I checked timing yesterday. It was off by 3 degrees or so. Book say only + or - 2.

Dude, its the computer itself. If there are no codes and you changed all those parts than take a look at the puter. It wouldn't hurt if you took it to a shop where they could look over it for you. Don't know what to say... Buy another truck.

the problem is the distributor drive gear bushing. you will need to pull the distributor, the gear is driven off the cam and drives the oil pump. you need to replace the bushing and the gear. this is a problem 318's had 3.9 is a 318 minus two cyl's.

Is the bushing and gear on the distributor or is it what the distributor hooks up to?
