Subject: Any cams or rockers for my 88 v6?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm getting tired of not having any power. I'm looking into maybe getting a cam or some RR's for my truck. All the RR's I can find are for a Magnum. Does anyone know where I can find some RR's for my non-mag V6 or maybe a cam?

Also what all would it take to put the magnum heads on the truck. I read somewhere where there were some holes to be drilled to make the TBI manifold to fit but can't fine the post anymore. Also would the header bolt pattern be the same.

Thanks for any help, just trying to see what options I have with my current setup.

There maybe some after market cams available. Here are some ideas that will give you more torque. I had a 87 that was gutless. Replace your stock air filter with a K&N filter. Install a MSD 5 or 6a with a MSD Super Conductor wires, NGK FR5 spark plugs gapped out to .050". Replace your stock muffler with a high flow such as a Flowmaster 50 or dynomax. This may not sound like alot but this will add between 20 and 30 hp total and considerable low end torque.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Ya, I've got the K&N and exhaust on already. As far as ignition goes I have a Blaster 2 Coil (got it free) and new plugs, cap and rotor.

I'm thinking of bolting on a set of magnum heads, with some 1.7 RR's and some headers. I found some in a local junkyard and I think I can get them pretty cheap.

If anyone knows what problems I will run into, let me know. I know I will have to drill new holes in my current intake but will that be it? I'm thinking of getting a Fuel pressuere regulator too. Maybe bump the fuel pressure up a few psi to compensate for the magnum heads and rr's.

Thanks for all the help
Kurt

That sounds like a great deal, but I am going to look into the Magnum head swap first, I think I can get a good deal on the heads.
From what I am understanding I can take the Magnum intake gasket and line up where I need to drill the new holes in my non-mag intake. Hopefully that's it.
If I find out that it is too much trouble I will try and contact you about the rockers if you still have them.
My email is Kurt93PGT@raceremail.com if you would like to email me a phone number or just give me an email address I can use.
Thanks for all the help.

Kurt,if you look at both intakes you,ll see its not as easy as just drilling your pre intake to fit the mag heads

i did what your trying to do,but i had the heads drilled and tapped, which worked out fine,[just find a good shop that can do this type of work]you,ll need the pushrods from the mag motor also

but i would,nt do it again,i would put the money in my pre-mag heads,i did,nt see much if any gains,i think i would have gain more with working the pre-mag heads with port matching and some light porting

just my thoughts on using the mag heads

good luck which ever way you go

Okay, so I've got another quick question. If I stay with the pre-mag heads, will going with the 1.6 rockers be the same as going with the 1.7 rockers on a mag head. I think I read that the pre-mag rockers are 1.5 stock.
Also, if I take off the heads, do a little porting (mainly clean up the castings) and port match everything do you think this will give me a noticable increase with the rockers?
Do they make a cam for this motor or will the 1.6 rockers change the lift enough?
Thanks for all the help vern, I'm trying to stay away from a V8 swap to keep costs down, but I want to have a fun street/strip truck (maybe mid 14s if possible). BTW this is an 88 Sport RCSB with the A500.
If you have any other suggestions on the heads while I have them off, let me know please.
Thanks

the pre-mag is 1.5,yes the 1.6 is like going to the 1.7 on the mag

the 1.6 on your motor is like putting in a .400 int./.440 ext lift cam,the cam thats in there[stock] now is like .373 int/.400 ext lift,so its like going one step up in the cam with out the extra work and exspense of a roller cam[about 10-15hp gain]you can feel the difference with no bottom end loss

yes hughes engines has cams that work in these motors, around $200 for regrounds

also a electric fan will free up about 8-10 more hp,if you do your premag heads mill .10-.15 thousands off this will up your compression a couple points,it all helps

i have a pr of premag heads i,d sell but the shipping would be high about $30 each head last time i checked,i,ll sell pr for $80

Okay, I think I finally decided on keeping the pre-mag heads. I'd like to pick up the RR's from you but I wouldn't have that much for a month or so. But if you still have them in a month and can remember just email me.
If I happen to get some extra cash before then I will make another post.
Thanks for all the help guys, I think I finally have a plan on what to do (for now!).

mopar makes 2 cams for the pre mag

towing rv
and
towing rv performance

you can bolt the mag heads and intake right onto
the premag engine and runn your throttle body
on the intake

We did a setup like this on an 87 mag heads and
intake on an 88 motor and a reg 2bl carb with
the hotter mag cam and an old style 318 points
dist it ran very well

we did however remove the devider in the intake

88 and up are roller lifter motors

Really! I was wondering if that would work. So my throttle body will pretty much bolt to the intake? I mean I have no problem drilling and tapping some new holes if thats the case.
Damn, that just seems too easy to pass up now. I can weld up the injector bosses and I'll be sure to take out the divider and port match everything.
Thanks for the info- thats great, you just made my day!

There is a guy on this board that took an older
motor bolted his heads and intake on and is
running it in his mag truck

He did not even use the mags hotter cam and says
it runs great for years now

Don't try to weld the holes shut you will crack
the manifold

you can tap and put plugs in

I cant remember what size we used but we taped the
injector holes ans shortened some bolts allen
head and screwed them in with silicon and they
were fine

We made an adapter and used a 500 holly 2bl carb
it ran nice in an 87 dak

The 88 and up are roller lifter motors just like
the mag
