I have a 96 dakota slt 3.9L auto When I start it the rpm's go up normal but quickly fall causing engine to stall Its usually hard to get going in gear due to stalling Once its going it runs normal I have had this problem off and on for a month or so but seems worse in the cold weather recently any Ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Sounds more like your battery is going soft. Low voltage to the PCM is usually noticed by the symptoms you describe - it starts to lose the idle memory. Once its running and charging, the memory comes back, and so does the idle. Until you replace the battery, if you give it a little gas for a minute or 2, it should go back to a normal idle a little sooner - but sooner or later, it will get too old to even start. Cold weather will lower the voltage further - that's why you're noticing it more. I don't think the IAC is that temperature sensitive. If it did this constantly, that could indicate a dirty IAC, but that's not what you describe.

i agree with Kowalski on this one. i still have the orig battery in my '00 QC and every now & then, especially since fall is upon us, my truck will lope at idle until the voltage comes up. then all is well again.

I have seen a number of people talk about a weak battery causing problems. I do not disagree but am somewhat confused by this. Why wouldn't the pcm receive the proper voltage from the alternator after the engine is started. I notice as soon as the engine starts the volt meter says that I have in excess of 14 volts available.

It does - but then it needs time to relearn the idle memory that it lost while voltage was low...

I didn't even think about the battery...good point. Get that checked first. If it's not the problem, THEN clean your IAC. lol

also, if the battery load tests ok check for a loose/dirty ground to PCM. if the IAC was dirty it would be doing all the time.

Repost:

I wrote awhile back about how I found a parasitic drain on the battery in my 92 Dakota. My brother had owned the truck for years, and went through several batteries, and the dealer never found the issue.

I finally solved it with a multimeter and by pulling fuses. Narrowed it to the horn/tachometer fuse, and pulling out the tachometer drive board made the current consumption drop to zero. It had been 105 mA. In examining the board and how the circuit was laid out, I found that it was not defective, but a poor design. The board receives both battery and ignition feed, and the battery feed kept a transistor turned on, and dumped 12V to a 5.6V Zener diode, allowing the 100 mA to go to ground with the engine off.

So I cut the trace to the battery feed on the circuit board and jumpered it to the ignition, and it still works fine, and draws no current with the engine off. Problem solved.

If you don't drive your Dak daily, and it has this tach board, it will quickly drag your battery down and computer will lose settings.

Just recently had this problem. I also have a 96. Cleaned my IAC which was covered in black soot, but was also quite rusted. Reinstalled the rusted IAC and still had idle problems so I picked up a new one at Advance and so far so good. I had no indication of a faulty battery previous to the idle problem, but if it acts up again I'll be sure get it checked.

That board must not be on all 92s. My 92 has sat for weeks at a time and fires right up, cranking briskly.
Or...it's been fixed....

That's great info to have!

Thanks For all The feed back. I just put a brand new battery in the truck back in july The old battery was fine to. One day I helped a guy jump start his truck and he hooked his end of the jumpers backwords frying my old battery so I don't think its the battery. This IAC is something I'm unfamiliar with any information on where it is and how to clean it would be gratly appricated
Thanks Again

it mounts to the back/ center of the TB with 2 torx screws. take it out and clean the plunger without pushing on or twisting it. just spray it with some carb/choke cleaner and gently wipe it. then clean the opening in the TB that it fits into. if you take the TB off the manifold you will see the area it seats on. clean that area especially. be careful not to lose the oring for the IAC.

if it's intermittent like you originally stated. i am not sure if it will help your problem. but it won't hurt to clean it anyway.
