hey every one. i love this site and i plan on joining in the next few day. to get to the point i am 16 years old and i bought my first truck this week w/ my OWN money. lol im not a spoild child. needless to say i worked my but off to buy a 2002 Dodge dakota SXT with the 3.9 automatic. while saving up i set extra money aside to mod up the truck. I want to increase my MPG mainly but i also would like some extra hp. I plan on making a home brew CAI with a u bend mandrel piping and i want a dual side exhaust. i want it to be as loud as possible with the dual do i am thinking of super 40 flowmaster with 2.25 piping and 3" tips. would i loose alot of back pressure with that set up. finally waht other modifications can i add to assist in mpg and hp.
thanks

Hi, I just wanted to give you a tip. Don't join this site. The only thing you can do is have a profile(woop dee doo), see the member forums(which I never look at) and see the album pics enlarged. The for sale, and chat room link don't work, and the guy that manages this site is slack, thats why the links don't work. I'm a member(i regret) and everything I do on this site, you can do without joining. p.s once you join you can't get a refund.

Well, first I'd start by doing some reading at these very forums. That's what I've been doing, and what I do at any forum I enter. Read first, ask questions later.

There are plenty of posts with useful information on them on ways you can mod your truck for better performance and mileage, and what you can expect from different exhaust systems.

The first thing you can do to help your truck out though is find a good brand of oil that you trust and go with that. There are plenty here that will tell you Amsoil, and others that will suggest other types of synthetics. Synthetics are definetely the way to go on a new(er) truck. They don't specify synthetic oil for the Corvette for nothing. My place of business uses synth's for our fleet and we've had good luck using it as our trucks get abused.

Certainly. I haven't seen anything that says you can't do to this truck what you can do to just about any other vehicle.

You can get different injectors, do the throttle body mod ( V8 throttle body for more airflow ), the crank sensor mod, the other intake sensor mod mentioned ( I forget the name at the moment ), headers, hi flow cat, have a shop tune the computer or do it yourself if you have the proper scan tool.

Of course there's also the 1.7 rockers, doing head work, modifying the intake, etc.

It all depends on either your skill level/availability of tools/time or the amount of $$ you have set aside to have the work done.

More important than any of that is to learn what things to avoid wasting your money on.

If it sounds like a gimmick, it usually is. That's the best advice I can give you.

Find your power in the things you already know about. Head work, headers, reworking the intake, increase the flow in and out of your motor.

Buying garbage that "swirls" the intake charge for better atomization doesn't apply to multiport fuel injection, so why would you buy it.

I'm going to assume that you have some automotive knowledge if you plan on doing any work yourself to your Dak. IF that's the case, just use good judgement, and if you find something that you want to get for your truck, research it first, then buy it. It's better to wait and research a part, then buy it and be disappointed in the result.

Fastman 46mm TB and Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers. The best bang for your buck are these 2 mods. Oh, and relocate the IAT to the intake tube and do the crank sensor mod. I did have the superchips power programmer and it worked very well but you have to run premium fuel with it. Stay with the Dynomax super turbo or flowmaster and don't go too big on the exhaust, it will only hurt you unless you have a turbo or other power adder.

I have an 02SXT also, my opinion is to start with the basic mods and work up. Synthetic oil, colder plugs, Autolite, E3 or Halo, 8 mm Taylor wires, brass cap & rotor, 180T-stat, Air intake, Airaid, K&N etc. larger TB, TB spacers are a waste of money, relocate IAT, flow through muffler, I recommend Magnaflow, headers the list goes on. Search the web and this and other forums there is alot of info out there. LOL

IAT relocate 6" from TB
crank sensor 3 to 4 degree advance

fastman or F&B 46 or 48mm throttle body
cold air
1.7 harlands bolt in no adjusting and show a 1.71
ratio

now do the exhaust
headers high flow cat
cat bac system don't go any bigger than 2.5 single
2 1/4 dual

now the ignition
6a box 8207 coil MSD

The worst thing about the intake is the casting
at the gasket flange gasket match this

better plugs NGK Vpower
napa mo26 & mo 28 cap and rotor brass incerts
taylor 8mm or msd 8.5 wires

with this great performance and gas mileage only
limited by your right foot

20 to 25mpg

my 4x4 22 24mpg

computer the stage 2 chips mileage gains 1 to 3mpg
there 25hp gain is way off its more like 10 to 15
with some low end torque gains

super chips tunner 98 and up
reflash 96 and up
92 to 95 there is a mopar performance comp

that should keep you busy for a while do them in
that order doing exhaust first will cause low
end power loss you must improve the intake side
first

I should start a different thread for this, but what do you mean by a reflash on the 96 and up system? I know that I can't chip my 97, but what exactly is flashing. Is it something done by a dealer or mechanic with the high end scan tool or ???

Flashing to me is upgrading the BIOS on my computer by replacing the parameters my computer runs from with updated parameters that address certain issues my computer may have with some components...I assume the effect is the same with flashing in your scenario? Only difference is, I don't know where to put the floppy disk :D
