Went by the dealer where I bought my truck to ask about the dual cat converters and me changing the exhaust system to something dual. Also ask about changing the air intake. He stopped me right there and said that he couldn't advise me other than to tell me that if I do either mod I will void out the entire engine warranty. Is this true?? It's an '06, but I didn't think they would/could do that. If anyone can give me some info I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I don't think they used to be able to void those kinds of mods...but I think a lot of companies now are adding a sh!tload of fine print to make it easier to void warranties, so it wouldn't surprise me.

My friend just got an '06 Chevy Cobalt and I guess even bolt-on mods can void the warranty unless they're purchased through GM and installed by the dealer/authorized installer. The intake wouldn't be a huge deal...just swap it back to stock when you gotta take your truck in to the dealer...exhaust would be an issue if what that guy was saying is true.

They can't void your warranty just because you made modifications unless they can show that those modifications caused the condition that is being warranteed. For example, if you install dual exhaust and your timing chain need to be replaced, they can not refuse you.

On the other hand, if you modify the a/f mixture or timing and burn a hole in a piston you would be out of luck. If you install different rocker arms (not going to be your problem) and rods, lifters or cam go to hell you would be out of luck.

I forget the name of the law but there is one that protects you from unlawful denial of your warranty rights.

It could be that the real reason is that, like in MA, it's illegal to modify the exhaust from stock (unenforced and unenforceable, of course). If it still passes emissions and reasonable noise laws, there's no reason this should be. But it's an unproven system, so it's easier not to let people play.

These are the same people who want cars to drive themselves by radar, and take away our manual transmissions.

Thanks for the input guys! I am going to stop by another dealer and see what they say. I asked a friend of mine last night that used to work for Ford and he said that was bogus info. I'll see what the other guys say.

Thanks!

The Magnuson-Moss Act

Protecting tweakers, tuners and other users of aftermarket equipment. FANNING FEARS. You want to upgrade your vehicle with aftermarket equipment but your worried about putting your vehicles warranty at risk.its no wonder. How many times you’ve heard someone of a dealership say that installing aftermarket parts automatically voids the warranty? This common misconception has been repeated often enough to be widely believed – though it is completely false.

FACT: Dealers don’t like warranty work , because it pays less than normal repair work. By promoting the myth that aftermarket equipment automatically voids warranties, some dealers avoid such low-paying work. Instead they attempt to charge customers the prime service rate work which is rightfully done under warranty.

THE TRUTH

Most vehicle owners are not aware they are protected by federal law: the Magnuson-Moss Warranty- Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975. Under the Magnuson-Moss Act aftermarket equipment which improves performance doesn’t void a vehicles manufacturers warranty, unless the warranty clearly and conspicously states that aftermarket equipment voids the warranty. Most states have warranty statues , as well . which provide further protection for vehicle owners.

VEHICLE DEALERS OBLIGATION

Suppose your modified vehicle needs repairs while still under warranty. Without analyzing the true case of the problem the dealer attempts to deny warranty coverage. He made his decision simply based on the fact that you’ve installed aftermarket equipment- a covenient way to dodge low-paying warranty work.

FACT: A dealer most prove –not just say- the aftermarket equipment caused the need for the repair before he can deny warranty coverage on that basis.

YOUR RIGHTS

Point out to the dealer the provision of the the Magnuson-Moss Act require that he explains to you how the aftermarket equipment caused the problem. If he cant or his explanation sounds questionable it is your legal right to demand he comply with the warranty.

cold air intakes, after market exhaust, jet chip
super chips or anything like that as long as its
50 state leagal and does not alter emissions
will not void a warrantey

Think of this how could these companies even stay
in business if all there parts void warrantee

listed as off road only or any internal engine
mods will void warrantee only if it was the cause
of the failure

I have put headers rocker arms and super chargers
on trucks that only had 50 miles on them right
from the dealer to my shop for the work have never
had any dealer probs they call me and I tell them
these are 50 state leagal parts and no warrantee
refusals

now cam pistond diff rods and cranks will take
the engine warrantee away but I stand behind
that type of work for 1 year threw my shop I
gurantee all our work most shops wont do that

transmissions also if the shift kit was installed
by a quilified shop they can not refuse warrantee
work now if you did it your self than they can

I always tell customers if they say anything
have them call me and I have never had any
refusals from them doing warrantee work in
over 30 years
