a short or something drawing current once you turn off the truck. You can't judge alternator health based on it being hot. Verify the alternator is putting out 13.8 volts or a little more. With the truck running, Disconnect the negative battery terminal and verify the truck continues to run. If those checks are good, you have a circuit drawing current when the truck is off. Start looking at circuits that remain powered when the ignition is off, like the cirgarette lighter.

"With the truck running, Disconnect the negative battery terminal and verify the truck continues to run." This is a BAD practice, as the open circuit created by doing this can cause the voltage that the computer sees spike to 18V and blow it.

The proper way is to use a multimeter instead of damaging a $300 device. Check voltage with engine running and off. Should be about 12.6 volts off and fully charged, and about 14 volts running.

With a multimeter that has a 10 amp range, you can put it in series with the negative cable and negative battery post *with engine off* and see if it's drawing current while the engine is off. Should be less than 100mA.

I'd like to add a bit to this. If your multimeter does have the 10 amp or so feature and the reading starts to read and then nothing, your draw is greater then the 10amp or so the meter can indicate. you blew the internal meter fuse. just replace it. no damage done. Then start looking for a serious short. I'd start with any wires under the battery. they seem to become dammaged sooner then others.

So many problems .... So little time
