Subject: Cat. Conv. Purchase

Message:
I have a 1999 3.9L 2wd Single Cab Dakota and I am looking at the magnaflow cat. converters on http://www.car-sound.com/02product/shopdisplayproducts.asp?portal=49State&make=Dodge&id=274&cat=Dakota
It gives me 2 choices Part#23232 which is a direct fit and Part#91006 which is a universal fit. I have seen where I need to know if it is a Vin#x and I looked at my vin number and there are 2 x's in the Vin# so I think I have a Vin#x vehicle. So if you were me which one should I buy? I have a guy to weld it up for like 30 bucks so if welding is a determining factor which I am pretty sure both of these will require welding I got that covered. I am going to buy this today if I can get an answer so thatnks for all the help.

I believe the direct fit is a bolt in and is more expensive. It bolts in at the Y-pipe and goes all the way back to the muffler. The universal is just the converter. Its cheaper and must be welded once your old one is cut out.

Yeah, direct fit costs more because it includes the pipe the cat is attached to which is like 4 ft long. Like stevedak mentioned above, you unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one.

If it's like my 98...and I'm pretty sure it's similar...here's the way it went with mine.

I bought the 91006 off truckperformance.com...this one required that you cut the old cat off. Now what I was told on here was to measure it all and leave enough pipe so I could fit the new cat into place and then clamp it onto the pipes. Then it's done. Simple as that.

HOWEVER...here's how it went for me. I got the new cat, held it up to the old...new cat was prolly about 2/3 the size of the old. So once I cut the old off, the new cat wasn't gonna fit in there, period, without going on a quick parts run. We ran to Autozone and bought a pipe that was flared on one end (or whatever you call it...bigger on the end so that the old pipe fits INSIDE of it). We cut that down to size and clamped it onto the exhaust on the Y-pipe side...then we fit the cat converter in and clamped it. Unfortunately, the clamps didn't work so well and I have a very slight exhaust leak. So I'd recommend just skipping that step and getting the guy to weld it for you.

I really like my carsound cat...it made my exhaust MUCH deeper and considerably louder (I've got a Flowmaster 40 series muffler). You can definitely tell it flows more than the stock cat.

Hey, thanks for the help. Now since i was waiting on the response I think I'm going to also throw on a set of Gibson headers Part# G27GP306S.From this http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/ site. What do you think about thoose with the order of the universal weld on Cat. Part# 91006 ? It comes to $517.71 with shiping so I thinks that is a good deal. I also was wondering about the gasket that is supplied with the headers. What is it made out of? Is it going to leak? and What troubles should I expect from these headers? Can i get a better gasket than what they give me? I realy know nothing about headers and would appriciate any help i can get.

It shipped on Sept. 8th and arrived on Sept. 13th...I placed the order on Sept. 3rd. It took bout a week before they got the order details to Magnaflow and before Magnaflow shipped it (it ships directly from Magnaflow).

I think your motor is the same as mine...maybe I'm wrong...but follow your radiator hose from your radiator and it should curve and go straight down onto the engine. That end is hooked to the thermostat housing. I think there's 2 bolts to unscrew (maybe 3). Pull it up and the thermostat is sitting right there.

Oh and be prepared to lose a bit of coolant...I siphoned out (stupid drain wouldn't work) a gallon or so of coolant when I did it to help minimize spillage.

Okay well I've had the headers for a lil and Im still waiting on the cat. A question occured to me.
Should I wrap the Headers in heat wrapeing or just leave them unwrapped? Is there any difference if they are wrapped or unwrapped?

Did you buy any of the ceramic coated headers?
or just the stainless steel ones?

wrap them if you bought the stainless steel headers because
they get super hot and heat up the engine bay which isnt
good... especially if you want your motor breathing cool air

well obviously they will not look as good as regular headers but
i wouldnt worry about what they look like, its the performance that
counts right? haha

im sure it wont look that bad if you wrap them well (tightly)

I have been reading a LOT of bad things about header wraps. Has anyone had a bad experience with this stuff? It says it will void my warranty and deteriorate the headers faster. Can anyone confirm this?

i know my friend wrapped his headers on a newer toyota tacoma
because they would get so hot and melt some of the wheel well and
stuff like that...

i dont know how the wrapping could be a problem, its just fiberglass right?

good luck
