Subject: What's causing the ticking noise?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello to all,

My 2000 Dakato 3.9 with 105K miles on it has suddenly developed a ticking noise while the engine is running. What are the possible causes and how difficult would it be for the backyard mechanic to repair?

regards,

David

You have to run down just what is ticking first to get an answer. It can be more then one such as sticking injectors or valve noise. Go buy a stethascope at a parts store(cheap) and check out the engine. Don't get scared. Your going to hear noises with it that will blow your mind lol.

So many problems ... So little time

Well, I took the air cleaner unit out and the air hose gromett from the valave cover and revved the engine. The clicking noise was much louder which leads me to believe it's within that area.

well taking a wild guess here but its possible you could have worn rocker arms or lifters going bad.... worn rocker arms i would role out cause i have 99 dakota with 45k on it and i had 2 rockers split in 2 peices down the center.... but your ticking noise can be in that area...you could pull a valve cover off and see if you have any lose rockers or could try new roller tip rockers from harland sharp or junkie oem parts or replace both rockers and lifters but make sure thats yor problem first befor taking a guess and putting out over 300 bucks and still have the problem...

check your exaust manifold bolts. They are prone to breaking and will let the manifold get loose enough to make make a ticking sound that is really from an exaust leak.

Exactly what xmr2 said, same thing happened to me on my '98 and same thing on my '85 bronco, except the bronco didnt have broken bolts, it just fell out.
