Subject: IAT relocation effect gas milege?
IP: Logged

Message:
I know that relocating the IAT sensor will trick the computer into thinking that the air coming into the engine is colder than it actually is, making the fuel mixture to be adjusted more toward the rich side. Will this effect my gas milege, because I'm getting around 17mpg and I don't know if a little power is worth making the gas milege drop?

It varies on vehicle and driving style. If it makes it worse, just move it back.

I relocated my IAT, manually ported the TB, and installed the Autolite plugs. On a recent trip (4 hours in 85 degree weather) I got roughly 20-21MPG highway at 80-85MPH. Before all the mods I never got better than 17-18MPG on -any- trip. I'm not sure which mod boosted the MPG, but I'm -pretty- sure it -wasn't- the TB porting :0)

IAT relocation is worth it, I think. Made a difference!

Key words> I THINK

The basis of your computer is to monitor the
oxygen sensors in your manifolds and your
IAT sensor to correctly mix your air fuel.

If fooling the sensor of the IAT is going to
make it run rich, you are out of your optimal
air/fuel ratio. It is worse for your engine.
Why wouldnt you just leave the sensor out. Or
stick it near some cool flowing air (outside)?
I have consulted my mechanics. They all say
the same thing. Its all mental, but your repair
bills wont be.
I think you guys are getting greedy on the free
mods.

Teamfast have you tried that mod? if so, did it cause you problems? if you didn't try it... and so many people have tried it and worked great for them... why do you insist that we are screwing everything up? by the way... bernd is a mechanic and ASE certified and all that B.S. He knows his sh!t. I dont think that mod increase my mileage but didn't decrease it. If you think about it changes your fuel curve and that will change you ignition timing and other stuff... doesnt that sound like what a Jet chip does... havent seen one of those break an engine.

What if you don't have the air intake that you guys have They don't make one for the 94 Dak I have the K/N chrome open air breather. Can you move the IAT into the bottom of the air cleaner or would it not do any good? I don't want to make a home brew intake, Am I out of luck?

Get some wire, splice in an extension for each wire, and mount it behind the head light. Or in front of the radiator. Etc.....

would it help to put the IAT in the air hat because with airaid it isn't gonna reach the tube.

Yes it would, but, honestly, why not just bite the bullet and get an IAT Adjuster from someone like Speedtweaks?

At least that way, there are no holes to plug if you don't like it, afterwards (You can just turn the IAT Adjuster off).

Well, I don't see what else it could be. The spark plugs were done a while ago, and besides a slight smoothing of the idle, I saw no improvement to the gas milage. If someone can explain to me how porting the Throttle Body made a difference, I'd love to hear it. :0)

I personally feel that the IAT sensor, in it's stock location, can get -heat saturated- very easily. Let's face it, it's housing is brass, and it's screwed into the engine directly. It's probally accurate up until the engine gets to operating temp, then your going to get heat soak. I talked to a Dodge Tech about it and he told me the same thing, and that he himself had done the MOD. He flat out told me that the stock location was, in his mind, a design mistake.

Although I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had any problems? I keep seeing Teamfast knocking the mod saying it's going to cause problems, but no one coming forward and saying there are any...

Lil Blackdak,

It'll work with Airaid, I just drilled a hole in the tube just behind the filter, threaded it, and screwed the IAT in. You just have to get wire extensions. Of course, I screwed mine up at first and drove around with a MIL because of a loose connection for about a month. I hate busy school scheduals. :0/

We all know that DC doesn't always keep us performance freaks in mind. Moving the IAT is a great idea. It did not hurt my milage at all.
