I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota Club Cab,2WD,3.9L,with automatic transmission.

I guy who fixes transmission on the side "rebuilt" the tranny for me because it was starting to slip.

After one week, the "rebuilt"tranny seemed to ok, and overdrive was working too. I drove the truck on the freeway yesterday,and I noticed that the overdrive is not working anymore. I pressed the O/D switch on and off but nothing happens.

Any idea that could be the problem?

On my 90 Dak it was the computer. The most common problems I've found with OD has been the solenoid in the trans and/or the computer. Check for codes. You should check the wiring as well. There should be a constant hot going to the solenoid. Unplug the connector, check for a hot. Don't check for 12 volts when it's plugged in as voltage will be traveling through the solenoid and it'll appear you have two or three hots.

Another problem causing this could be the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor). It's very likely to be different than the speed sensor for the speedometer. My truck has two speed sensors, one for the speedo and one for the computer. To check the VSS you'll have to raise the back end off the ground. Hook up a volt meter to the VSS wires. Put the truck in gear. The faster the wheels turn the higher the voltage will be. Keep in mind that there is a small amount of voltage to the sensor. This is referred to as a reference voltage. It allows, for the most part, for the computer to recognize the VSS sensor. If the senosor is bad the referance voltage will not go through the senor, thus the computer will log a VSS fault code.

My solenoid and VSS was fine. I couldn't find a used computer anywhere. New ones are about 200.00. Instead of replacing the computer I bypassed the circuit, using a manual switch. It took me all of 15 minutes to do and it works fine. I've been driving it this way for about 9 months with 95% highway driving.

What I did was find the connector that goes into the trans for the OD sol. Mine had three wires. Some have only two. I found which wire was the hot. The other two wires I traced to the engine compartment. I stripped back about 1 inch of insulation on both to expose the wire. I ran a wire from one wire, to the next then through the firewall into the dash. I hooked it up to one of the terminals on a switch. I then ran another wire from the other terminal to a ground. When you turn the switch on it grounds the wires just like the computer would. I usually switch it on when I'm going at least 45 mph. The only problem I've had was remembering to turn the switch off when I come to a stop. If I don't it's just like keeping a manual trans in gear when stopping and your foot is off the clutch.

Thank you for the information Jackson. It really seems like I am in a big trouble, again!.

This is the second tranny I have had installed on that truck. I bought that truck a month ago and the transmission keeps failing because the cheap..assh** who sold me the truck does not want to spend the money to fix it right. But that was his last chance to get it right. So, I will take back the truck to the guy and get my money back or otherwise he will be in big trouble.

For me, the solenoid inside the tranny had loose screws holding it to the valve body. Maybe your friend didn't tighten them enough. If they come loose, fluid leaks around the solenoid check valve and it will not shift into 4th.

Thank you guys for your replies.

I took the truck to a transmission shop today and they told me that there is a spring missing.The spring goes outside the transmission and connected to one of the shafts. I am not sure what that spring does but that he thinks that may be the problem. So the guy on the transmission shop is going to order the spring and I will take the truck back. I keep you posted.

check the elect connections first

could be many probs

bad sol
stuck valve
very common the servo spring broke

you can check the sols with an ohm meter 200ohm
jack it up and try a forced shift while runing in
drive ground sol and it should shift

try some lubegard red it will help sticky valves
than ask the guy who rebuilt it to take a look

I put a 99 transfer case on a 96 dodge dakota transmission. The speedometer plug will not fit from 96 to 99. Does the speedo have to be working for the truck to shift into overdrive?
