Subject: 3.9 Burning Oil
IP: Logged

Message:
All: I purchased a new 3.9 CC 4X4 back in 2002 and the engine has been burning oil since day 1. The oil gets black within 1000 miles of an oil change and I usually have to add 1-1.5 quarts before I change it @ 3000 mile intervals. I pulled the plugs at 25,000 miles and they were not fouled. It currently has 35,000 miles and no change. I'm thinking the rings never set but will this cause a problem in the long haul or be just a nuisance? Or could this be caused by some other problem? Engine runs fine. Thx for all replys.

check the pcv to see if its working, better get a new one from a DC dealer or maybe the plenuim gasket is leaking under the intake, look down the tb with the throttle plates open with a flashlite if you see black oily looking then the gasket is bad

something is not right there

a pluged cat will turn your oil black real fast

at 35,000 I would be all over chrysler

cracked head block or a leaky head gaskit

are all the plugs a nice tan or is there a black
one in the bunch

Get on them thats bull

Larry: I thought I might have had a plugged cat myself but the engine runs fine and I recently passed emissions inspection. I thought I would have failed if I had a plugged cat. When I changed the plugs @ 25K miles they all looked fine with just a bit of tan residue on them. I don't lose coolant. One of my colleagues say it could just be blow-by from the rings not seating properly.

The blow by could be what it is but its a very
unusual thing to happen you should have going
after chrysler while you were still on the 3 year
36,000 mile

burning oil like that

the tan color is normal and good if all that oil
is burning they should be blackish

this is weired how about this theory crack oil
entering the exhaust directly into the exhaust
manifold not the cyl the cat would burn the
excess oil and you would not see it smoking but
using that much oil humm

another thing the oil getting so black exhaust
backing up into an oil gally threw the crack
it has to be something on this order because
if it were blowing by the rings you would see
it on the plugs

it would have to be in the head at 35,000 miles
its not even broken in yet

I have 115,000 on the motor I am running in my
4x4 and the guy I got it from beat the living
daylights out of it I know that for a fact the
reason I got this 92 was he rolled her 1 night
gave him $1000 for the truck

But now I run synthetic 6 months or 6,000 miles
and I never have to add oil I mean never

There is a company that makes an additive that
you add to your oil that is guranteed to seal
small cracks can't remember the name off hand
I have used it in the past and it worked very well

I also seen it used recently on the speed channel
on 2 guys garage but for the life of me I can not
remember the name

What it did for them was seal a crack and leaky
head gasket it worked so well the comp in the
bad cyl came back up to within 15 lbs

check into this it may help or solve the prob

I wish you good luck with this
