Subject: 26 mpg!

Message:
I just came back from a road trip through the Rocky mountains. I averaged 26 mpg up and down the winding mountain passes, passing the slow trailer haulers and such. Thank You Fastman for the excellent results. I could have gotten better milage if I wasn't so anxious and had to pass all the slow pokes. No real magic in my Dakota, just 3:55 gears, Drop-in K&N, 1:7 HS rockers, intake smoothed and radiused, Fastman 46MM TB, relocated IAT and crank sensor mod. 87 octane fuel. Now thats more like it!! And a full cargo under my tonneau cover.

That's great

tells me all sensors are working perfictly

A jet stage 2 chip would give you 1 to 3 mpg
more and the chips will run on reg 87 fuel

my best was 25.8 250 mile high way trip
cruse at 60 a/c on

still getting 22 24 last fill mixed driving
22.5 this is a 4x4

As I have said many many times the V6 if set up
right are very economical

When you are driving are higher altitudes the O2 sensor will recognize the thinner air and lean out your fuel. This is the most likely reason for the increased MPG. I was getting 17-18 MPG normal mixed driving. Since switching to synthetic oil that improved to 19-20, same driving habits and locations. Hit 24 MPG on last high mile Interstate trip. If you truly want to know what is happening to your vehicle, keep a log like mine. I record miles and gallons each fill-up and calc my MPG. If there are dramatic changes in the average, I know there is a problem. I also log all maintenance and changes in this log by date and miles. This is how I know the synthetic oil is most likely cause of my MPG increase.

Ahhh! That's why!

I'd wondered why mine seemed to get better mileage on trips to the NC or GA mountains, and what you say makes sense, Mr. Demon. Thanks!

This morning, mine was showing 21.7 on the computer when I was headed to the Greensboro airport, all road miles at 70. I hope to get my 1.7's in soon, too. I've had them for several weeks now, and something else has come up every weekend! I DID get under the hood cleaned up Sunday, so at least the preliminary cleanup is out of the way, and I also went and bought that 3/16 Allen socket so I can torque 'em. Maybe this coming weekend?

i average 15mpg in the city v8 3.55s
17-19 high way.

its funny how you cant wait for something to arrive like the 1.7 rr but when they show up it takes you more than a month getting around to installing them.

i need to buy some of these 1.7 rr's

my v8 dakota gets the same gas mileage as my dads inline 6 4.0L

"When you are driving are higher altitudes the O2 sensor will recognize the thinner air and lean out your fuel." Wow. My BS meter just went off.

The O2 sensor is mounted in the intake, not the exhaust. It doesn't sense "thinner air". It will help the ECM decide to cut back on fuel flow a little to compensate for thinner air, but it cannot sense anything but the oxygen content in the exhaust. By cutting back on fuel, you also lose a little power.

The drop-in K&N does nothing. It's the TB and port work, and the rockers that would have the biggest effect.

Hey Bob. Whatever sensor is used, the air/fuel mixture has to be regulated. Thinner air at higher altitudes has less oxygen per cubic inch, therefore fuel is leaned out to accomodate for this. Is that a more accurate desription of what I was saying earlier? And what's a BS meter? I have used various meters and gauges for testing equipment at work and have never come across one of those. Can't find one in the catalogs either.

i believe that if the engine is cutting back on fuel it is saving fuel...

Sorry, but the O2 sensor is an exhaust sensor, not intake. You are thinking of the MAP and the MAF ( manifold absolute pressure, and manifold air flow sensors )

The job of the O2 sensors is to monitor how efficiently the engine is burning the air/fuel ratio and along with the other sensors ( vehicle speed, temp, map and maf ) adjusts the ignition timing and fuel timing/ratios accordingly. Particuliarily, the 02 sensor behind the Catalytic converter tells the computer if the cat is functioning properly as it should 'sense' a different amount of unburned fuel ( less ) than the O2 sensor before the Cat.

can't edit my post, just a correction..

MAF sensor is the Mass Air Flow sensor...my brain locked up on that one previously.

No its in the exhaust pipe right after the 2 sides
come togather in the y pipe

the map reads baro presure at higher altitudes
there is less presure telling the comp this it
will cut back the fuel

when going threw mountains up or down and your
truck starts to run bad just pull over shut it
off restart and the baro pressure reading will
change and it will than run fine again

manifold absolute pressure mopar does not use
a mass air flow sensor on the mags its a map

the lower pressure reading lets the comp know
there will be less air comming into the motor
it is read at startup they are usualy about
a pound off watch the weather or check on the net
what the pressue is 29.0 at that mine reads
28 as most do

my altitude here is right around 1,100 feet above
see level

less air entering the motor the o2 sees that and
also compensates and cuts back on the fuel so
both are causing this

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this site. You have made life with my Dakota more bearable on several occassions, even helped solve a couple of problems that stumped a few local mechanics. Ever heard "just keeping driving it until it gets worse and then we can figure out what's wrong"? At any rate, back to the question on this line. Before driving to Alaska my son converted my 93 Dakota club cab with towing option to a cold air intake and I added a cab high shell over the bed. My best highway mileage before this had been a dismall 14.5 mpg. Stufffed top the gills the lowest mileage I got to a tank was 17 mpg and the highest was 20.5 mpg. Unfortunately around town mileage in Anchorage has dropped to 11.5 mpg, but I developed a problem with the cable running from the battery to the main fuse box which messed up the truck for a while. Now fixed so maybe I will get some of it back. That's 4 mpg less than I got back in Montana (3000 feet higher elevation).

have you checked / changed the O2 sensor lately? that's usually the main cause for sudden drops in mileage. especially when the vehcile has over 60k miles.

Thats strange...loading your dakota with more weight and then getting better gas milage. I experienced the same. I got my best gas milage when I was towing another car on a 250 mile trip. Can anyone explain this???

Have any of you guys experimented with warm-air intake, i.e. open-element filter pulling in engine heated air?
