I have a 02 3.9 and was wondering if the 180 thermostat actually is effective and should be used
cause i called one of my local peformance shops to see if they could do it for me and they said that it would harm my performance if i put it in. Does anyone no if thats true or not.
thanks

Well "effective" is subjective to what youre looking for. Common fixes when installing a 180 are for low-mid grade fuel ping (or detonation) or slightly richening the fuel mixture. Its known these engines run hot and lean from the factory for low emission numbers.

I swapped to a 180 with the voodoo Autolite plugs to snuff ping on a 99. Worked fine and emission tests were a breeze. The engine is cooler and happier in my opinion. The parts guy a NAPA gave me the same yarn about not being a good idea to drop the temp. Me thinks advise is also subjective.

My experiance was it was not a G-force butt-push effect. The idle smoothness improved and off-idle throttle response seemed more crisp.

Theory suggests the 10 degree drop allows the computer into thinking the engine is still cold where in richens the mixture slightly. It stays rich until optimal running temp is reached. The programmed 190 is never reached. Richer is good and there is no noticeable loss of milage.

i ran one for a few months
it did solve a ping issue for me
a very slight improvment in power
but man did it suck down the gas
and once oct. came around it was constantly tripping the light, i switched back

I've been running one for over two years now...no problems at all. Never tripped the light for "too cold for too long" and Ohio winters aren't exactly warm...though if you live where the winters reach record low temps, you may have issues with that. I thought it did make my gas mileage drop, but I was wrong...my grandpa calculated 20mpg when he drove it his way almost 300 miles from IL back here to OH. And I average the same driving my way...which is a lot less gentle...lol

if you live in a cold area the 180 is a problem
in some trucks

the factory 195 is a metered flow and runs 195 200
most of the 180's in cold will only run 168 170
if you do not reach 170 it will trip the code

try a regular stant 195 they run aprox 185 in the
dak V6's and it works out very well

I like these guys that tell you it wont work when
the mopar techs tell you your best power and fuel
economy is at 182 183 so the 185 is almost perfict

The reg stant not the super stant will run 185
and helps with performance a cooler runing motor
is more volumetricly eficiant any performance
oreanted mech or race guys will tell you that

some of these guys behind parts counters have no
idea what they are telling you

It'll sound like BB's being thrown around in your engine I've heard...if it only gets down into the 30's, give it a shot. It gets below zero occasionally here...frequently down into the teens and I haven't thrown a code yet.

yeah i think im gonna try it out
Ive been tryin to find every lil bit of power as possible to uphold some pride on the streets.
I do know that when ever i downshift...or go up to like 5k and let it gear down the exhaust pops real loud sometimes depending on how hard i gave it gas before doing it or if i was just downshifting so i don't know if thats pinging or just odd lil backfire cause it never pops inbetween shifts...just when it winds down...what is that?
