Subject: clutch/fan question
IP: Logged

Message:
My '93 3.9L is overheating and I have determined that it is a non-working clutch on the cooling fan which is causing the problem. My dad, a really thrifty "old school" auto mechanic, says that I should just scrap the clutch and fan assembly altogether and put a new, cheap, efficient lightweight fan in it's place. I do not intend to use a clutch with the new fan. I live in florida, so a fan running full blast all of the time shouldn't hurt? Is this a good idea? And are there any fans that someene could suggest as a good replacement? Will this hurt my mpg much?

Also, I've heard of a lot of people replacing the clutch/fan assembly with an electric fan. Is this possible in a '93? What is involved? And does anyone have any suggestions?

I am a poor student, so I am leaning towards the first option.

Thanks!
Joe

replace the clutch

electric fan like the permacool 16" 2950 cfm
summitracing.com $100 but you will also need
a direct read thermo control like the flexolite
around $35 make 4 brackets and mount it right
into the shroud a nice clean instalation and
this fan only draws 8 to 10 amp most others are
12 to 15 amp its what I run on the V6's the
V8 you will need a dual setup with 5000 or
more cfm flow

the electrick is good for 5 to 10 ponies and also
helps gas mileage

I haven't done this mod, ZZark did you buy the thermo control or use what comes with the fan?

Also is the old fan easy to remove? I read in some old posts something about the nut being pressed on and you beat it off. That true? I've a '95 so I'm always interested in GenII experience.

My 150 came with everthing.
The web page lists the 150, but there is no link, so I'm thinking they no longer make the 150.
Flex-a-lite makes all kinds of fans and accessories.

Yeah, the nut can be a real problem. It is not pressed on, but screwed on.
There are lots of posts with different methods to remove the fan.

black magic fan here also, over a year now
(sorry 4got the model #)
but mine has the termo switch right on top
an a heat sensor you mount to the rad.
I'm very happy with it
(also has other plug ins, run one to the ac comp. line, fan kicks on every time ac comp kicks in)
the ac has never worked better
sitting at a light or in traffic it stays real cold

Larry, is it alright to let the fan run all the time. Just wire it into the ignition or something? I live in Al. It's always hot here, so I thought I could save the extra cash by not buying the servo.
