Subject: No oil when filter removed
IP: Logged

Message:
I've changed oil a million times. WHen I remove the oil filter, I always get a little oil that drains out when the filter is removed. I just removed my oil filter but no oil came out. Once the filter was off, I noticed only a small amount still in the filter, about 1/4 full.

I also noticed that it takes a little longer for my oil pressure light to go out when I start up, about 1-2 seconds longer.

By the way, the oil pump is new (rebuilt). This is the first time I've changed the oil with the new pump.

Is this a problem or am I over reacting???

Any help would be appreciated.

The Pros are going to suggest you insert a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Of course it wil indicate the start-up and total pressure. If this is the first change after the pump, you should have noticed excessive tappet noise or rattling on start-up. The "idiot" lamp has no value in it's duration as the sender may be suspicious.

Check the new filter now, maybe the other went into bypass or failed. Without a proper gauge read you'll have to guess. How tired is that motor?

Your oil sender is next to the distributor. You'll be supprised to find 8 to 10 lbs idling is normal, running (2,000 RPM) is from 20 to 40 lbs.
Your dash gauge lies.

If your engine is old and/or high mileage, it wouldn't hurt to (carefully following directions) run Amsoil, or another, good engine cleaner, to be sure the gunk is cleaned out.
Put in a good oil and filter. No, do not exceed 40 weight.

How critical is the oil pressure? Don't know, but here is what I did;
recently sat in 105 degree heat, idling with the A/C keeping the cab at 75 degrees. Fourty Five minutes. Zero pounds of oil pressure on the gauge.
But......I already knew the truth was it was 10lbs.

rule of thumb-10lbs of oil pressure for every 1000rpm,this info is in the old mopar engine book
for 4cyl to the hemi[426]

most of these motors run 20-30 at idle[hot]and 40-65 on the road 3.9,5.2,5.9 this varies with oil weight, oil filter, cond of motor etc

I should have mentioned that once the engine started, the oil pressure was normal. The gauge remained 1/3 to 1/2 of scale (no numbers on the scale). It just seemed that it took longer than normal to get the pressure up and it seemed odd that very little oil was in the filter when I removed it.

The engine sounds perfectly normal, no tappet noise.
Also, not only is the oil pump new, but the engine is a fresh rebuild. Lots of new parts, new bearings (nominal bearing clearances).

The only thing that comes to mind is from watching Overhaulin' or some show similar where they were getting no oil pressure due to the pick up tube/screen being too close to the bottom of the oil pan and was starving the pump because little oil could get into the screen/tube.

Is it possible that you bent the pick up tube slightly when you replaced the pump?

Its possible the the "anti-drain back" flapper failed in the oil filter and all the oil siphoned backward back to the pan ... ive seen it in mostly fram filters ...

I changed the filter and the oil. After 3 or 4 startups, the pressure is good and it appears the pressure builds much quicker upon initial startup. Must have been that damn filter.
Thanks for the comments.
