I own a 2001 3.9L dakota with a 5 speed with 18,000 miles and have started to experience intermittent problems shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear...assuming a bad sychro? Any advice from fellow enthuisiasts will be helpful.

How difficult is it to change the oil? I am not aware of any services that can be performed on a manual transmission.

Befor you spend a lot of money

On the bottom of the trans you will find a drain
take it for a ride warm up the fluid than drain
there will be a fill plug on the side it is also
how you check the level fill to bottom of hole

But use a good synthetic fluid like amsoil we have
found that the syn fluid really helps with hard
shifting and the ocasional sticking and hard to
get out of low or rev

It will shift smother and easier and last longer

The NV3500 is known for the hard shifting the syn
fluid in most will completly eliminate this prob

Thank you Larry...I will have this done and see what happens.

Any recommendations on where I can have this done other than the dealerships?

I think that the general idea here is that you can do it yourself for almost nothing. Buy a slender funnel, maybe a siphon pump (hand operated jobby from Harbor Freight), and however much transmission oil you need for the tranny and you're in business!

If that doesn't suit you, most lube shops can do this for you in about 20 minutes.

a shop will do the change but either tell them or
go buy the fluid your self or you may get the same
fluid you had

The syn really helps these trans
