I am about to do my first oil change on my 98 3.9 128k miles. I bought it at 126k. Im sure it has used just regular oil all this time. What is everyones favorite oil to use? Will synthetic make a big difference? Ive heard good things about amsoil as well. Let me know what you guys use... Thanks!

Eighteen down on the General Board, is Steve Roark's Amsoil site.

Take advantage of the offer.

My 98 3.9 automatic has surpassed 500,000 miles, on the original engine and transmission, using Amsoil
0W-30 Series 2000 motor oil and ATF in the transmission.

I could have done that using conventional lubrication, but it would have cost more than twice as much money and I would have dumped over three times the used oil on the lawn in front of the house in the mobil home park. Just kidding about the lawn.

best of all these are all found at your closest walmart, K mart or auto parts chain
the most important thing with oil

I suggest running something to clean out the buildup inside the engine. you can either pay for an engine flush or do it yourself with transmission fluid, marvel mystery oil, sea foam or another product designed to clean the buildup/sludge. That's a high milage truck and you have no knowledge of previous owner maintenance.

adamklein,
Any oil that meets or exceeds the manufacturers recommendations will be fine.

If you use Castrol you'll probibly want to change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Synthetic oil will last longer between oil changes.
Amsoil can be changed, along with the Amsoil Ea filter at 25,000 miles.

You might check out the information at Steve's "Free" thread. Or, if you fear he'll Hypnotize you into using a better oil, go to www.amsoil.com.

NEVER EVER use an harsh engine flush. I did this in my 92 Dakota 3.9 with 97,000 a few hundred miles ago and am now getting cat litter and coffee ground like chunks of carbon build-up blocking my oil pump screen. I can now only drive a mile or two before loosing oil pressure. I have changed my oil pump&screen once, dropped and cleaned my oil pan twice, poured clean oil through motor and screened out chunks and poured it through again probably 30 times, have even poured kerosene through and screened out chunks probably 50 times. I have probably removed a Coke can full of chunks. Every time I fill it back up with oil and run it, I loose oil pressure in a mile or two. I then let it set a while, drive back home, drain the oil and find more chunks. Anyone have any advise??

Any good name brand syn is far better than
conventional oil

WOW this guy with the chunks this will come from
the motor running to cold under 180, lots of short
trip driving not alowing the motor to completly
warm up or just plane and simple not changed at
regular intervals

The sea foam or amsoil engine flushes work good
I sugest you try some sea foam in there and run
it a 100 miles this should soften and desolve the
chunks it may take a few flushes and changes to
clear that up like every 1000 miles 3 times in a
row

I have been using amsoil for years now and my
vehicles, including my john deer lawn tracters
lawn mowers the 1990 just last summer got a new
plug 15 years on the same 1 my 1995 deer still
same plug I run it in all my equip and never
have any trouble

I did however change to royal purple in my truck
and cars but all other fluids are amsoil

I run the royal purple the same as the amsoil
10w30w a K&N synthetic medium filter and change
ever 6 months or 6,000 miles careful here thow
some filters will not run the full 6000 get a
good filter Amsoil, K&N, Napa gold a good syn
filter material will filter down to 10 microns
and hold more dirt befor pluging up running
threw the bypass with no filtering going on
you can see this by a sudden change in the presure

I have had a few come in with burned up
transmissions in under 50,000 miles these guys
run there trucks very hard replacing the trans
no cooler or shift kit completly stock the same
guy same truck Amsoil trans fluid this guy now
has over 150,000 miles on the truck its starting
to use oil from the years of abuse but the trans
with the amsoil is holding up great this
particular guy has never had a trans in any of
his trucks last longer than 50 60,000 this is
a first for him

I will swear by the Amsoil universal trans fluid
it more than doubled the life of this trans the
temp on the transmissions running the amsoil also
run from 10 to 20 degrees cooler from the reduced
friction of the syn oil

smother shifting longer life and better perf all
from the syn oil

Unless a customer asks for mopar fluid he is told
right away that there will be amsoil put in the
trans

we use 3 fluids in the shop
Amsoil
ATF+4
Redline

The redline will give you a little firmer shift
but also runs well in the trans

Go Synthetic and enjoy smoth shifting longer life
in your trans
